Lack of session documentation...et al....

Why?

Why do people who call themselves "engineers" that cant name a freakin audio track?
Why do the same people, who fail to label the tracks, decide to leave the "track names" in the edit window? If you cant name the track, dont leave the "names" in the damn edit window!!

What also gets my goat, I have several rapper I work with. This one guy also works at
a Local Digital Performer studio. The rapper wants me to mix 2 songs which were recorded in DP at this other studio. So I call the "engineer" up, and give him detailed instructions on how to export the aif files so I can import them into Pro Tools. I ask him several times if he understands, he says yes and will bring the sessions over.

My client arrives, and then the "engineer" w/ the DP files. I load them up, and he DID NOTHING, just saved it as the regular DP session. I import the aif's into a new PT session, and NOTHING lines up correctly.

I tell him, how he should of done it, and then he says, "oh like how you told me over the phone" What a ****ing dumb ass...the rapper was pissed too, as he just spent an hour trying to get this sorted out. I got paid for my time, but the rapper
should have billed that "engineer" for the time...since he was too stoopid to do it right.

I dont get it, if you cant do something admit it!!! Sure I lose a client or 2 because I am honest when I tell'em I cant do something for them. Why would I say I could do it, do it all wrong and ****ed up, and lose them as a client anyway?

I ask again...WHY?

ok, I feel better...

Did you try mentioning to him saving the file as an OMF file?

Then in Digitranslator just opening it up?

To me this is easier than telling someone to burn consolidated files.

First I dont own digitranslator, and would rather eat my sock than give digi money for something that practically all other DAW companies include within their respected software.

Second, like he would have known what in the Hell I was talking 'bout willis...

So then what do you do with songs from other producers on other platforms like Logic,Cubase,Nuendo and Cakewalk?

Its a common thing to save songs on the OMF format and open it in PT with no problems.

Everything is intact.

I guess whatever man.

Dude,

would you LIE to a client? Would you give a client the WRONG session info, and act like its no BIG DEAL?

This guy TOLD me he understood, and HE SAID he was going to give me the session how I asked for it.

So then what do you do with songs from other producers on other platforms like Logic,Cubase,Nuendo and Cakewalk?

I tell them to consolidate it...for the love of gawd thrill, this aint freakin "rocket surgery". And you know what, the guy I work w/ that uses cubase has NO problem with how I want the session, same w/ the guy that makes beats in Acid, and the guy that uses Logic...and....

So, I am just a freakin JERK, because I am unwilling to buy a digi product?

So be it...

No one saying your a jerk, but there are tons of people doing songs with an unmeasurable number of tracks and edits that asking them to consolidate tracks is too time consuming.

Also some programs(ala Fruity Loops) consolidate as stereo files only.

This can turn a 50 track production into a 100 track nightmare.

Most professional PT studios know to have Digitranslator(not say you are not a pro).

Its used all over.

And yeah its a pain in the ass to pay extra for it or the MP3 option, but in some cases not having is a detriment.

If you had told him when you go to save the song choose in DP OMF format it would have been really simple and it would have been less chances for him to F*ck it up!!!

Like i said man whatever.

Well, this DP session wasnt that many tracks....it would have been a peace of cake...

IF he knew what he was doing.....for fun, maybe I will call him tomorrow and ask for that DP OMF file, it will be interesting to see what I get....

I am only a "project studio" using PTLE, so I cant go over 32 tracks anyways...which I always tell my clients......if I cant help them, I will point them in the right direction, which I did in this clients case.

This is the MOAN zone, I guess I am a freakin JERK for moaning about people that call themselves "engineers"?

lets be friends thrill

rawk

I can undedstand both sd and thrill.... I don't have digi-translater either and don't intend on purchasing it anytime soon but I do deal with session files from other studios...most people don't have a problem consolidating the wave files...Some just don't understand what the hell I'm talking about (lol) I think it's a pretty easy solution... As far as some people saying it's time consuming, to me it doesn't really take much longer than bouncing a song down.... I think I have more of a problem with engineers / producers who don't take the time to properly label things....Years ago, it was common practice to label everything with tracksheets.... Now that everything is turning digital it seems alot of people are lazy..Hell, I do this just so everything is identifiable in the audio folder instead of Audio 1, Audio 1.2, Audio 2... Very frustrating trying to figure out somebody else's session...but hey, I get paid by the hour

jeez, freeze all the tracks then go to the soundbites window n export each one separately into a folder called "**** you Pro Tools"

No 100 track mess. Mono is Mono, at least in DP 4.61 which ROCKS, can you say included auto-tune melodyne style?

Of course...I still use melodyne. Damn.
