When dreams go wrong and what to do about it.

In January 2003 I quit my (very successful) career as head of IT-security at a Norwegian bank.
To run my (until then part-time) studio full time.
The dream, baby!
---
Over 2003 I put ALL my saved cash in the place.
---
In Summer 2004 the place got robbed. Cleaned out :-)
---
In Autumn 2004 I found out I wasn't covered by insurance (!) after all. :-D
---
In September 2004 I got hit with 20,000 dollars in backtaxes (Working in banks pays too well apparently) :-D
---
In October 2004 I (reluctantly) moved out from the studio (basement in central Oslo and probably THE BEST place I have ever seen for Vibe/recording). :-D :-D
---
Since then I've been recording at home (small apartment), and the occasional live gig for bands through a multitrack. All my vocal tracks have "neighbours toilet flushing" ambient effect. :-D :-D :-D
---

Heres the funny thing:

I'm a better engineer for it, and a better musician. Over the past year I've been forced to be more creative than ever before, both with music creation and mixdown.
As a result: my songs and mixes are light years ahead of what I was doing when I had the location for it.

Funny that.

On a sidenote: Any one in the Oslo area with a spare room? The wife ain't happy about this Voxbox sharing our bed :-D
Women...

Man at least you've got a sense of humor about it !!!!! Isn't it funny ?????

It's called PERSPECTIVE. Which is somthing we need to master to become a better ARTIST ......... ( i've been f'd over too ... )

If your mixes are better ...... F it .... GOOD JOB.

just don't go making the same mistakes again. Run a tight ship.

I mean all that gear ??? Motion detecting lights, alarms, bars or security on the windows and doors, a well trained dog and a nice firearm are in order. tutt
AND GOOD INSURANCE.

My point is ... if you we're meant to do this ... you must PERSEVERE !!!!

Good luck to you !!!

someday..you´ll have a new room and all those nice toys again.......and you´ll make 500x more use of it!

BUT, there´s nothing that can substitute important experiences you made yourself !!

bad story...great end thumbsup

and btw. I visited oslo twice as a student...it´s just the most beautiful & inspiring place I`ve ever been...seriously!!!
..having a nice girl & living in oslo is already a great gift imho.
having a badass-studio there is just the icing on the cake....

though, we all don´t mind a SSL + couple stuffed racks

hope, I´ll be there again someday.

Muahahaha she didnt see it coming :-)

Actually she's been pretty great about it. I couldn't have made the transition without her blessing... truth was I was a cranky bastard in an office: suit and tie and bad attitude. At least now I'm a human being again...

Even during the whole robbery my mood never got as bad as the monday-morning-meeting-blues.

Miss the cash tho.. sigh.

Wow. That's an amazing story. I'm always bitching about the size of my room. I think I'll shut up about it now.

You're doing the right thing, and it matters more than money, and is more likely to make you happy. After all, if you would have more money, you would only be trying to buy happiness with it... and gear.....

Good luck to youthumbsup
