sonic solutions support sucks!

I recently bought a 2 channel sonic solutions AD/ Da converter.

I called and email sonic for the pinout of the unit so i could start using it...

A week and a half later, i still haven't recieved a message or email back.

So i look to the gracious inhabitants of gearsluts:

The unit has a 5pin xlr in and out...
I origionally thought this was the stereo analogue in and outs, but this unit is also supposed to support aes in and out.

so what is the pinout of this unit

also, there is an auxilery toslink in and out.... what is that used for?

If anyone can help me out, i'll buy em dinner

Thanks a ton

AES/EBU does not have to be on 3 pin XLR...

As for Sonic supprt, the lack thereof is legendary. I'll root around and see if i can find it for you here.

WOW!!!!

i learn something new everyday....

what else can aes ebu be carried on.... maybe thats what the auxilery toslink optical connector is for.

hopefully to make it easier, the unit is 1ru, slightly bigger then a half rack space wide, with screws to adust input and outpu and a big yellow know to select sample rate...

Thanks for the help mr. blackwood

AES is simply a format - it can be transmitted on any number of carriers.

I can't find any more info on that unit, but if it's 5 pin, I'll bet you have a common ground with the other 4 pins carrying differential pairs.

What do you think of sonic solutions converters anyway? I got it pretty cheaply, so even if its utter crap, its not too big of a hit

Not very much, but you could do worse. If that's the least of your worries you're golden...

sonic solutions support sucks!

I called Sonic today (middle of the day) to ask a couple questions about CD premaster, and to actually order it, I think.

The line rang and rang and rang...not even an answering machine.

The DAWs are no longer handled by Sonic Solutions, but rather Sonic Studio LLC. Sonic Solutions probably doesn't care about their old converters (or the new company's products) since they don't do audio DAWs anymore. As for Sonic Studio and PMCD (Pre Master CD), did you call the appropriate number or numbers from their contact page?
http://www.sonicstudio.com/company/

It's almost 10PM and I just got an answer after 2 rings - not a machine, a real person.

You can also purchase directly from http://store.sonicstudio.com/ and download it instantly.

Sonic Solutions support was indeed legendarily poor, but I've had great luck with the Sonic Studio guys since they've taken over the audio workstations. It's a small company (unlike the parent) and you can actually reach and talk with all the principals if you want to. I can't speak for anybody else, but I sure haven't had any trouble.

Yes you were right Jay, I had apparently had an old number off of their website they hadn't updated yet.

AND, I have an answer for the original poster, since I have one of those breakout cables sitting right here (I have a bunch of old Sonic gear from around 1995, I even have an original Start Labs writer). I just check continuity...

OK
(the breakout XLR's are not labeled left and right, they're colored red and white)

on the 5 pin connector:
pin 1 is the common ground.
pin 2 is pin 2 on the red XLR
pin 3 is pin 3 on the red XLR
pin 4 is pin 2 on the white XLR
pin 5 is pin 3 on the white XLR

You'll have to figure out which is actually left and right for yourself.

Hope that helps.

It's amazing the info you can find on the internet. An older, somewhat esoteric converter with breakouts, and all you need to do is post a question and the info is at your fingertips.

I've had expiriences with Sonic Solutions DVD-authoring systems.
They were very expensive. The distributor in my country was very helpfull at the time, but the software was very incomplete, cut copy paste was an option! Save as didn't work. Shortly after we bought sonic fusion with SD1000 encoder (for like $10.000) they dropped support, no updates, no bugfixes. We bought Sonic Scenerist and it's the same story, expensive, buggy and no updates.
I'll never buy anything from them again.

Thanks a lot

Thanks for a hint!
Where is this info from?
Do you have a manual?

I own two manuals. One for sonic solutions ss-610 and another one for sonic solutions ss-611. One if the two is an AD/DA converter with regular XLR ins and outs in the front panel and the other one is an OPT converter with AES/EBU in the back panel.

Yes,

I have manuals and several of the Converters SS-613 I believe. There are also some complete cable assemblys from Whirlwind for the audio I/O.
I use these things for general test bench to A/D or D/A.
Currently I have a Digigram VX222 driving a Hosa AES to optical converter to feed the 613.
Just making test signals etc.

I'm in the midst of attempting to hook up two Focusrite Liquid Channels to a TC Konnekt 48 digitally using the ss-611 as the format converter. Ergh. The manual for the ss-611 might/might not help but I'd like to take a look at it. Can you post it or a link, or pm me? Thanks!
