Re AKG: Stupid pricing or stupid buyers?

A few years back I bought a used AKG 414 EB. It didn't come with the standard AKG 414 mic clip, a part that I was to find out is called the SA18/3B. I could, of course, use that same clip from one of my other 414's, but I figured I'd check with AKG and see if I could get an additional one, for the times when I want to use multiple 414's. (I like them on Toms, and have just been improvising with a generic rubbery clip).

I spoke to a very nice woman at AKG, who told me to sit down before she told me the price. It was $279!!!! For just one dumbass clip!!!!

I posed to her the question that since no one in their right mind would buy it at that price, wouldn't the laws of economics dictate that they should sell it for less?

She replied that, in fact, many people were buying them, as they are a discontinued item, and a lot of people don't like the shock mounts that come with the new 414's.

I said that it was hard to believe that MANY people were buying them at that price.

She said: "Well, some people apparently have more money than brains".

To which, I could add nothing...

I would have been willing to pay $25 for it, just for the design and aesthetics. But I would have considered even $50 to be pretty outrageous.

By the way, my local dealer told me if I buy through him he can get me one for a mere $200. What a deal!
