Tascam VL-X5... srsly???

i was looking for a not too expensive pair of monitors for my room.
i have a pair of yamaha hs80m in my studio, but i sometimes need to work (record, mix) at home.

so i did a little research and read a lot of raving reviews about tascam's vl-x5.
people write things like "the best monitors for <600 bucks" and "what a pleasant suprise! better than anything in this price range!"

sooo i was pretty much sold. checked ebay, and bought them for 180 euros.

today the monitors arrived.

hm. wtf? i'm sorry, but i don't get it.
what's with all the praise?

they sound MUDDY. no bass, no details, just a lot of muddy midrange.
they sound as bad as my first monitors ever, edirol's ma-15.
listening to music on the tascams is a pain in the a**. and i can't imagine doing any mixing with these bastards. not even pre-mixing or anything. i want to throw them out of the window.

seriously. i'm angry. now i have to resell them again. kchhhhh...

i haven't found a single bad review about the tascams. i don't get it.
sorry for the rant... had to get this out of my system.

Chances are pretty good that most of the people who own those speakers don't have any experience with anything better.

exactly!
it's just weird. if you do a search on gearslutz, you only find very good reviews about these monitors. i thought that most people here are at least semi-pro, and are definitely used to better/more expensive equipment...

Hi disp,

I had a pair a few years ago and I remember being very happy with them. Sort of NS10's but active.
I was less experienced with no other sets of monitors to compare them with.
I'm actually looking for a pair now.
Do u still have them?
Cheers,

Sam

I've got a pair of these, and I've been perfectly happy with them. One of the best things about them is the adjustable EQ in the back. What kind of room were you using them in? I mean, they're not the greatest monitors I've ever worked with but for being at a low price point, I think they're pretty sweet.
