Old Time Vocals

Hello fellow slutz,
I'm looking to get a vcoal sound similar to that in old movies.
More specifically, something similar to: YouTube - Janelle Monáe - "Say You'll Go" at (5:01, where the background singers start singing).

This clip reminds me of Wizard of Oz. Is there anyone who agrees and knows how to achieve this distinct sound?

Thanks
Ray

It's the sound of a very bad damaged old recording.
You can get amazingly close to it by processing it through a very expensive plugin (around $700) called Speakerphone which is great for simulating stuff like that (I'm sure there must be a preset that fits your needs) or you can record a choir, then downgrade its quality by making an mp3 at 64 and boosting the low-mid end a bit to give it more bottom (around 200 to 300 Hz) and also low pass above 7-8K.
Let me know if it helped at all.

Ironic that it costs a small fortune to make something sound old and badly recorded.

Street price is about $450, so it's a VERY small fortune.

Great plugin, btw.

I've been wondering this for a while too. I don't know why I never thought to ask on here.

Took me back to "You Can Fly" from Disneys rendition of Peter Pan.
