Thread Starter | Worried about Yauch I hope MCA is alright. I love that dude.
They've held the album back from release for more than a year now.
I keep waiting for news.
I hope it's good.
I really do.
He's a really cool dude, Adam Yauch.

Not good, my dad died of lymphatic cancer. Hopefully they'll stop it in the early stages.

That's great news, I'm really happy for him and his fans!
I do find it somewhat funny and disappointing, however, that they spend so much time talking about his vegan diet, "eastern" medicine and visits to pujas and nunneries as his path to survival, and then mention, almost as a footnote, that he had surgery and radiation treatment for his cancer...
It is HuffPo, so what could I really expect?

he was either hedging his bets, or not seeing progress with the surgical and radiation treatments....

while I'm sure that a healthy body and a healthy mind is better able to aid in the fight against cancer, in all fairness they did claim it was a highly treatable and curable form of cancer. So with all of the speculation the credulity is nothing more than typical HuffPo psuedo-science mongering.
At any rate, either way, it's a great news!

Good to hear he will be okay. While he could have gotten this regardless,
it's likely he's a heavy cell phone user. Salivary gland cancer is extremely
rare but on the rise. Many studies (Google: "Salivary Cancer Cell Phone",
minus quotes) show a clear increased danger. The largest salivary gland
is below the ear. There is a lot that could be done to reduce those risks
like using wired earpeices. Bluetooth is almost as good and still far lower
emissions than the phone itself. If I forget my Bluetooth and I will be on
the phone more than just a minute, if possible I'll use my speakerphone.

Before you totally freak people out, it's important to note that the most cited "study" comes from Israel and it doesn't even measure the amount of cell phone usage, it just tracked a rise in salivary cancer patients.
It's also important to point out that the type of radiation given off from cellphones drops off sharply as it moves away from the phone so that the skin immediately near the cellphone gets dosed at orders of magnitude higher than any other tissue lying underneath layers of tissue and bone and there isn't a single claim of rising skin cancer rates particularly around the ear and side of the face. Unless it's magic radiation that disproportionately affects or targets certain areas, even at vastly weakened levels, then it's wise to be skeptical.
Of course, unless if you observe the heads of large cellular companies, the FTA, high government officials and people in the Surgeon General's office avoiding the use of cell phones you can probably bet the lack of correlation between cell phones and cancer is still tenuous and not likely.

Perhaps more dangerous than cancer are the people who try to force high doses of fear of cancer into the population. I know a LOT of people who experience tangible fear throughout much of their day because of their beliefs that a great many things are feeding them cancer through exposure, and they feel this way because they believe everything they read. Some "studies" are properly conducted and reported, and we owe a dept of gratitude to those scientists, but a growing number are merely propaganda. Trash. I do believe that there's a potential that long term exposure to cell phone radiation can be problematic, but I'm completely sure that it's not dangerous to the level that many would like us to believe.

I have no cell phone 'fears' from those studies. Just information to share.
I still use mine. Despite the write-off of the Israeli study it's worth noting
that the Partoid gland near the ear is where the near-tripling of incidence
occurred. The rate for submandibular, and sublingual glands didn't change.
Note, those are not near the ear. That one is right under it. Not far at all.
Or, you can just just write it off. I know many who smoke and reference a
90 year old smoker who is cancer-free when they hear smoking can cause
cancer. They once did for asbestos. Also, how many here use talc powder
ie. Baby Powder), without being aware of it's carcinogenic potential being
near asbestos? It will only take small changes in habits to avoid the risks.

So that's an opinion, not a study. There are other studies out there that do contradict this. The correlation does not imply the causation.
Also the smoking and the baby powder is a non-sequitur, just because smoking is denied by some and talcum powder could be dangerous (I have not heard this claim before) does not mean that cell phones are dangerous.

Elambo, I had indicated I still use a cell phone a lot, even without using
my bluetooth all of the time. I'm just a bit more careful, don't be a troll.
Jeremy, please re-read where I indicated the cancer show in the study
that tripled was in that gland right under where the cell phone is used.
It showed no increase in others not near where a cell phone gets held.
While not 100% linking cell use to that, it's hard to think of what could
cause the tripling in just the one gland. If it was dietary / environment,
affecting those glands, all three types would be affected, not just one.
Hence, those scientists said it's a very strong link, if not what they will
call a direct cause, just yet. They know more about it than we do here.

Driving with the damned things kills more people than salivary gland cancer ever will.

How many times have we all finished a 5-minute conversation while driving, hung up and then thought, "how the hell did I get here?"
Much worse is texting.

Much worse is texting. | studies have proven time and again that a cellphone is just as distracting whether you have an handless set or not. Furthermore, It is the increased cognitive workload and the resulting decrease in concentration that causes these crashes. So basically, having a conversation with the next person in the car is just as dangerous as talking on the cell phone. The phone is and its handling is irrelevant.
