Thread Starter | Crap, got an ear disease
Just got back from the doctor. Found out the hiss and worsened hearing I've experienced over the last year is actually due to oto sclerosis, some kind of disease that makes the muscle that transfers the vibrations from the eardrum stale and unresponsive. Dammit, this means I'm going to have to operate on both ears. It'll be fine but they'll have to cut me up behind the ears and fold 'em down...well, you know what I'm talking about. Dammit. But the good news is it can be fixed. I was really surprised to see my hearing is actually down a whopping 20%. Bass frequencies were down more than the treble which is unusual. No wonder the songs in my walkman have sounded weird to me. 20% was way worse than I had thought. Hmm, guess you adapt to pretty much anything. The body is an amazing machine. Thank god I live in a country with free health care!! |

Sorry to hear that you have to get surgery. As for it being "FREE", my mom is from Finland, and I have a ton of relatives there that have told me about the taxes in Sweden and Finland... Nothing's free. You just paid for it up front. So, you might as well use it. |

Did you get a second opinion? I know someone who had been diagnosed with otosclerosis too. However, it's apparently not something that can be diagnosed with 100% accuracy without actually seeing inside... And the symptoms can be similar to or confused with those from other ear conditions And... as I understand it, the surgery usually involves a laser vaporisation and prosthetic replacement of the stapes. .. Scary. From what they say, your hearing can be restored this way, but I wonder if it comes back sounding "different" too. If you do it, please post back here -- I'm curious to see how it comes out, as my buddy has pretty much just been waiting to see if his gets any better or worse on its own before seeking another opinion. -dave |

I will definitely get back and tell you how I'm doing. And about the taxes...yes, I suppose they are higher. Then again, we have almost no homeless people. But let's not go there. |
