Man I think I got in the wrong line of WORK!!

OK OK I love music and have felt lucky to have been paid to play it for years and since 1980 paid to record it. But now with the studio rate wars look at a rough estimate of the salaries of being a recording endineer for 30 years comaired to being a US Congress. I could have bought way more gear being a politician !! Oh well.
Recording engineer
1980= 40k per year
1990= 50k
2000= 55k
2010= 35k?? Just me not everyone else.

US Congress salaries 1980-2009.

1979-1983 $69,800
1984 $72,600
1985-1986 $75,100
1987 (1/1-2/3) $77,400
1987 (2/4) $89,500
1990 (2/1) $98,400
1991 $101,900
1991 (8/15) $125,100
1992 $129,500
1993-1997 $133,600
1998-1999 $136,700
2000 $141,300
2001 $145,100
2002 $150,000
2003 $154,700
2004 $158,100
2005 $162,100
2006-2007 $165,200
2008 $169,300

Not that I'm overjoyed about it, but it's actually not quite tracked with inflation since then.

You have to love what you do now more than ever.The last 10 years have been really tough for many people.For me, salary is one thing and life style is another.You could not pay me enough money to be in washington politics.Id rather be a broke...well lets just say less well off.Everything is relative.The people you see making all the money are all really happy right?I know of many wealthy people who's lives are true misery for one reason or another.

Yes you are right. Having money is not everything. I am trying real hard to enjoy the cruise through these challenging times. should be more thankful.

Kind of along those lines: When I was changing my major in college from chemical engineering to music, one of my professors told me:
"You're going to hate what you do part of the time, so pick the one you hate the least". A little pessimistic for my taste, but has an element of reality to it.

Of course, it's also fairly reasonable to say, you are going to hate what you do a fair amount of the time if you have to do it whether you want to or not. So pick one that you don't completely hate but which makes you a good bit of money. Use that money to then do the thing you love for enjoyment, when you want to do it.

I've settled with not caring that everyone else is making a lot more money than me. I'm making money doing what I love to do. On the worst day I just think about the five years spent working in kitchens, or that one year working at Sam Ash. On the average day I'm pleased as punch. On a good day I think I'm the happiest person alive.
