Staying motivated ...

Making music for the love of it? Yeah right, f*** that!

There's no love left in me, about to sell it all and call it quits.

(dont worry folks, that'll pass ...... i needed to vent somehow ....)

You sound burnt out; don't do anything drastic that you'll regret. I've found that a new hobby and a 4-5 month hiatus works wonders.

Yes I am totally burnt out but not from music, rather from my life same old routine ... I need a drastic change which is already in, I am selling my flat here and looking to move to the countryside.

Having a 2nd kid totally flattened my drive for music, both my wife and I work from home so we're fulltime parents AND our own bosses (tough tough tough).

I've been trying to make something happen for me music wise but in spite one cool placement last year .... nothing else.
Besides that I am sleep deprived, the little boy still wakes us up twice a night ....arrrrgh!

Frustration ... It shall pass, it shall pass ... And I'm so broke I can't even indulge in gear lust to calm me down

Spring seems to be around the corner, I can't wait to go outdoors and get some exercise, i know that will help tremendously.

One thing I know, for me anyway, that working from home was great for a while but after a year I had a serious motivation problem. As soon as I stepped out of the studio (3rd bedroom) the couch was there, clothes washing was there, my Tele was there and I just felt really isolated from the world. I acquired a studio (I'm post production) and go in everyday and that really brought me out.

I know your situation is different with your wife, kid and business there, but those things compounded by winter can get you down. Moving to the countryside may be a good change but you may be back in the same boat in 6 months. Every thought about sharing office space with someone? Getting out of the house and going to work may break it up.

Hang in there!

Spend a few nights in county jail. It's a great way to motivate.

Ya, and don't worry...they have "cell" phones there too. They're hanging on the wall just outside your room...
you'll need a lot of change.

Exactly. Instead, do something drastic that you'll enjoy, like blowing 10 grand on some choice guitars and amps.

I don't think he was joking. You should try it. I know quite a few people who use the Rocky theme as a motivational tool every day, my brother being one of them, and he's in music.

Having to pay my rent and bills is all the motivation I need.

Music may not always be 100% joyful, but it beats having a real job 100% of the time.

I recommend becoming a victim of the recession and selling, O I don't know, 7 hardware synths, monitors, high end telecasters, both your class A tube amps...effects and rack gear, microphones..

But as a reminder, don't sell the $500 of cables, keyboard stands, racks and studio furniture or mic stands. Put those in the garage.

I saw some commercial where this lady say's she has to peel herself out of bed every day. Me too. Mornings are the worst. After coffee and food it's better. Dealing with a bi polar depressive type brain is a bitch. Got worse after turning 50 a few years back. These words have helped me.

Release the stress & laugh.
Don't worry about if you ever record another track again.

if & when the hunger returns.....so relax.

[that's my dr phil comment for today]

That's the path I am trying to follow ... Like you said music will always be in me, I let HER (to quote Victor Wooten) decide if/when she'll be back.

Work slave hours for slave money ...

It's a choice one has to make for itself.

Could I live happily with very little money or live a mediocre existence for little money?

I'd rather sell on of my sons.

Seriously, I've sold lots of gear already, I'm keeping some preamps and mics ... all hardware synths are long gone ... what do you do when comes the time to sell your beloved AEA R84?

Are you talking about music not being motivating or life?

If it is music...

Put your axe down for a year or two.

I once put my guitar away for five years.

Then I met two great players and singers and for three years music was great. Then I put the axe down for a couple years again.

Then I found a world class drummer and a world class singer and for eight years straight we were gigging every week and the sound was awesome.

That ended in 2007 and I moved to San Fran and once again the axe is down till I find some great players and singers.

So as you can surmise, my take is that surrounding ones self with great artists is the ultimate musical motivator.

PS. Any great players or singers in SF? Bowie, Annie Lennox, Radiohead... please get back to me.

If you're having trouble with a lack of sleep because of the baby, why not sleep in a different room when you need to work the next day? If the baby is on formula, take turns with your partner. There's little point having two sleep deprived parents when it can be reduced to one.

PS: Can we trade? Our kid still wakes up every 1.5-2 hrs... and has done so for the last 13 months
