| Gearslutz.com admin | Record co's piece by piece - on line distro deals - I don't understand it.... much
I get music biz news daily via email.. Seems like every day, individual record co's are doing deals with indevidual cel phone companies or on line music distributers... "Universal to develop mobile websites Graphico New Media is to develop mobile websites for Universal Music artists, , with mobile service provider Bango supplying access and billing facilities." It all seems so ****ing DISORGANISED or HAPHAZARD... Seems like every other day some IT company annonces an 'exclusive hook up' or another.. How the hell are the public going to make head or tail of all this...???? I dont get it myself.... at all.... Go to boughthouseinmalibu.com to get Sony music downloads via your TV go to gaveitalluplivinginaspen.com to get Universal artists tunes on your cel phone got to nooneunderstandshowthisreallyworks.com to get all of George Michael's back catalog and a free mini urinal pendant. Do ANY of these hook ups make ANY sence to ANYONE here? Seems to be one announced every day.... Just seems like some sort of free for all MESS. Shine some light on this... PLEASE!

Jules I'd venture that this is the entertainment industry's attempt to come to terms with a technology they are still not entirely sure about ( funny how many execs in the industry are technologically illiterate), but are looking to replicate Apple's online success. The danger, I suppose, is that uncontrolled or unfocussed distribution channels will only re-inforce the perception of music as valueless "lifestyle wallpaper" in the minds of the public |

Yep, and add to that fact, the refusal of companies to work together on one standard/one system of distro. We're in for a long wait until they get it all together....

Don't worry about all the PSP stuff, it'll be gone in a few years...Can't understand why they're putting so much into it...who's gonna buy a version of a movie they can only play on a hand-held video gaming system? PSP = the new laserdisc. Much smaller, but equally as worthless in a few years. As far as all this "downloading content onto your cell phone" crap, it seems to me like they're thinking too far ahead of themselves. Humanity doesn't have a high resolution, end-all PDA that they've become slaves to yet (And NO, the iPod isn't close to being there yet). To me, it's all just a fad..."Oooh, look, I'm 11 years old and I have a 2 minute-long clip of the new episode of 'The O.C.' on my cellphone! Let's all gather around it during lunch period while we rummage thru our brown paper bags to see what our mommies made us to eat while we gossip about Brad Pitt!" |
