Exclamation This just in: They're Not Called "VST's"!

Stop calling them "VST's". "VST" is a PLUGIN format.

There's a reason why you don't call them "DLL's". It's because "DLL" is a file extension, just like how "VST" is a format.

They're not called "VST'S", they're called "PLUGINS".

No problem. I'm just trying to help make this world a better place, one step at a time.

Last time I checked, this is the moan zone.

Do you want us to quit calling bandages, "Bandaids" as well?

How about "Crescent wrench", or "Allen keys"? How often have you used those?

Great food for thought, but you might get an ulcer over this stuff........thumbsup

Never heard anyone use "VST's" to describe anything, but Ive heard "VSTI's" - and even used it, for virtual instruments.

Really? You never saw anyone make a post such as...

"What's the best bass VST?"

"What's the best drum VST?"

"What's the best synth VST?"

Maybe they are specifically looking for a VST and not say an AU or RTAS. Ever think of that?

Worst. thread. ever.

Then as I already mentioned, you might as well ask...

"What's the best bass DLL?"

"What's the best drum DLL?"

"What's the best synth DLL?"

It would be just as stupid, yet to the point.

I never saw anyone ask for "The best synth AU" or "The best compressor RTAS".

That was the worst. reply. ever.

VSTis was a term used a lot in the late 90s. But only cause Cubase was the first one to do instruments as a plugin. Time to move on. Call the VIs. I hate it when people (still) call them VSTis.

Anyone remember "Neon".

Wink

who would ever have thought a proprietary name could cross into common usage and eventually replace the purely descriptive nomenclature?

perhaps you can design a freeware alternative then use your netbook to e-mail it to everyone.

I'm with the OP on this one, "VST" as shorthand for "plug-in" has always bothered me.

I'm with the OP but maybe with less passion for the topic.

It is irksome, but only mildly so.

Isn't VST an acronym for Steinberg's Virtual Studio Technology and not actually a file extension? All the VST's I have have DLL as the file extension and not VST, so technically any plugin that operates under whatever Steinbergs Virtual Studio Technology is can be called a VST Plugin, or VST for short.

That's just my IMHO, if you don't like it you can GFY...........(go f..k yourself)

I'm really sick of everyone saying "XLR cable." It's not. It's a 3-Pin connector. Ok. Unless it is manufactured by Cannon, it's not an XLR. I'm sick of this bull crap.

For that matter, could we stop saying RCAs. If it isn't made by Radio Corporation of America, it's a phono plug, which if you wanted to be less specific is a coaxial cable. Let's get it straight people.

AND FURTHERMORE, Seriously, what's the most Ballin' DAW? I gotz to know dat.

saying "that's just my HO" would be correct but I wasn't really trying to be correct, more like just making a stupid joke

Every time I see someone mention "VST" I can't help but imagine someone with an eMachines PC running FL Studio trying to 'make beats'.

Every time I see someone requesting the "best VST" it's someone on Windows. Most people on OS X run PLUGINS that are in AU FORMAT. I've never seen anyone request the "best AU" or "best RTAS".
