Thread Starter | Blaming Apple for other people's hype
Least favorite grievance about the iPad is this one:
"Apple hyped this thing to the stars... I'm so disappointed..."
Actually, Apple didn't mention it at all until the moment they announced it.

- c | The downer is that the actual product didn't live up to the feverish speculation (by third parties, one presumes) that preceded the announcement.
Your original premise is true, though: Apple didn't "hype" it before this week.
My moans with the iPad: (1) No standard I/O ports (which today means USB 2, Firewire 800), (2) no camera, (3) non-replaceable battery (4) non-removable storage (5) silly name.
Cheers,

I really don't care about the product itself. It's not a big deal.
I just think people should realize that Apple itself doesn't do the hyping, people do.
Apple is quite tight lipped and just announces shit when it's ready to bring to market.
That's all they do.

As with the downloading thing, they have the both of best worlds (you steal music and you buy their iPod, you buy music and they make money and you still buy their iPod.)
In this case, they don't have to hype anything. So they get to benefit from free hype from fan boys. And, if it turns out to be overblown, they can say they never made any such claims and walk away clean.
And of course there's the fact that you see a Mac in almost every movie or TV show where a computer is involved, despite the fact that orders of magnitudes of people use something else.

Well this just goes to show that the smart people (and wealthy) use Macs!

It's been shown time and again that they make next to no profit on selling through iTunes.

It's not a universally held opinion that they don't make much on iTunes: Apple Apparently Turned $570 Million Profit from ITunes Last Year | Listening Post
There are lots of other stories speculating on whether they are making money or not. Of course if this were a record label, everyone would just assume they are lying.
I was reading that iTunes is something over 35% of Apple's revenues. If none of that is profit, that doesn't say too much for the viability of anyone selling digital music.
