So there is a lot of hate for the current posterboys of pop metal.....our good friends Nickelback.
Don't get me wrong, I think their recent stuff is completely soulless.
BUT......there is not a SINGLE person on this forum who does not envy their success. I don't care who you are....don't lie to yourself.......being in Nickelback would ****ing rock!
Those guys are RICH and they get to play music on stage in front of tons of oversexed women in their late teens and early 20's EVERY GODDAMN NIGHT! Dude.....hooters galore. Those guys get so much ass it would make a toilet seat blush!
Oh yeah and the sweet amps and guitars they have.....you know the PRS and Mesa you worked your fingers to the bone to buy on layaway? Yeah...they get PAID to play that stuff.
NICKELBACK WOULD ROCK TO BE IN!

I'd rather make absolutely no money than be forced to play that shit every single night.

I used to wonder why all musicians don't make commercial records...make catchy radio songs and make $$$. Sounds easy.
Now I know. The difficult part is believing in the music. I couldn't toil over a Nickelback song in a studio and give it all my heart. I just wouldn't be able to stop rolling my eyes at every turn, just begging for each session to end.
I'd be fired for incessant yawning.

In the beginning they rock pretty damn good. But as many bands that populaire after there first/second cd and being signed to a BIG major label...they start smelling the money (or there producer/manager) and must and play the same shit over and over again...

Sell...wait for it
....Out
Usual tell tell signs of corporate sell out is when you write a song about how cool it is to be a rock star. And no Chad Kroeger (sp?) we don't all wanna be a big rock star.

I think your all full of shit..so you would rather sit on your ass just getting by than be in nickleback, or engineer nickleback...it's so funny how all the engineers say that about most pop music but WHIT..Someone has to be doing it....The same guy's bitching about it are the same one making it... |

Why is that so hard to believe?
If I wanted to make money, I'd be a lawyer.

I only have one record of this guys ¨All the right reasons¨. I love how it sounds (really like the mix). Really like production. And I like the songs too.

as an engineer that is. If I was assisting, I'd take what comes - it's not like you're taking any responsibility for it, and I've sat through worse music on a session.
I don't think I'd every want to play IN Nickleback - come on, have some self-respect!

First of all, they epitomize 'sell out'. I went to a Nickelback show once. It was the most boring experience of my life. Second of all, they don't make as much as you think. They may be the highest payed rockstar, thats true. But the highest bracket air traffic controllers make $170,000/yr. The highest paid layers make $350,000 a year. orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon specialist probably makes $400,000-$600,000 a year. The average University president makes about $700,000/yr. NFL football palyers might make between $3-20 million a year.
95% of million dollar record contracts don't break even. So bottom line is, I don't think they do it for money.
hey, by the way, all the women I know who like Nickelback also have herpes.

I used to be one of those people who despised them but after some listening to their music and not to what others think, I think they have a true knack for writing really catchy tunes. Is it their fault that they write really commercial music? I would love to be in their shoes doing my own music so I can no longer slam them. The truth is, they play their own music and actually sing on stage which is a lot more talent than most of the acts out there right now. The fact that they worked with Mutt Lange, also tells me they are dead serious about continuing to rock hard and become even more successful. I cannot knock them for their efforts. Granted, a lot of their music does sound the same but they do write some good tunes. Anyone who would not want to record them is in serious denial. I would love to work with these guys on their future records.

The fact that they worked with Mutt Lange only tells me the corporate bullshit and corrupt payola system in the industry is still alive and well. Working with Mutt Lange has nothing to do with how serious they are. Anyone with a big label behind them could do it. As my buddy Steve Lukather says, "today all you need to be a rockstar is a computer and cool hair". amen.

Ok
First of all Nickelback has not sold out they've been doing the same stuff since the beginning...they were the same ....opening for bands in shitty clubs that I was touring with...so no they have always been this band.
Secondly...I'm jealous because women of all ages LOVE THAT BAND...they are not a contrived boy/girl/JLo type band...
They are a rock band...and...they rock at what they do
Is their music relevant?...to millions of horny women YES...to me...not really..
now which do you think is more important to them? Yup
And finally...working on a nickelback record would be great work if you could get it...most of us around here wouldn;t be asked...get over yourselves already...we could very easily comb through all you hater's resumes and see what you've worked on in the past year...couldn't we...I'm sure there is a lot of shitty music in there
Nickelback Rocks...

working with Mutt Lange (one of THE greatest R n' R producers ever) is huge...what planet are you from?

Because aside from Back In Black, Mutt Lange made some of the cheesiest and most soulless productions of all time. The man is synonymous with overproduction and corporate crap rock. Choosing him to produce your album doesn't make you awesome, it means that you've fully embraced the notion that you are top 40 crap.

Personally, I'd play in a Britney Spears cover band if it paid me millions of dollars. Then I could retire early and do the music that I really cared about. Compare it to an actor making a totally commercial, big budget film which then affords him the ability to work on smaller, indie films that he really is interested in.
The ones who "made it" doing great music they really believe in...like...maybe RUSH...are the truely lucky ones. They got paid big doing what they love. ...now that's "makin' it".
Don't knock 'em just because they're filthy, stinkin' rich. I suspect that they have a good amount of songs they really love that they've recorded or will record that will never make it to a Nickelback album.
I don't care for what they've turned into, but I'd love to be where they are in their careers.

HILARIOUS!!! The professions you listed require years of hard work in school before their first paycheck, long exhausting hours, and constant diligent focus not to **** up their careers.
Nickelback on the otherhand gets to tour the world and play music for 5-10 hours per week in front of hot women! Herpes or no herpes its fun to play to packed house of hotties. OH and BTW...Nickelback signed a contract last year with live Nation that guarentees them $50-70 million in touring dollars over the next few years. We are not talking about gross either, thats net. That goes into their pockets. Major rock acts are not making money on records, they make it on tours. They have already grossed over 100 mil.
Look my point in all of this is not to say that Nickelback makes great music. The point is that the VAST majority of people who have made a living at music, myself included, do a lot of things to pay the bills that are soulless. I have done tons of sessions for terrible artist and played parties, weddings, and shitholes to pay the rent. We all do it. None of us are beyond work.
In all honesty Nickelback probably loves what they are doing too. Their music has not greatly changed since they started. It's not easy to write pop tunes that people love. If it was we would all be rich. |

Grow your hair and write and record some hits.
Then please post your mixes here.
That goes for anyone else who feels NB is sh!t.
