What's the rudest anyones ever been about your studio?

Bit of a wierd one this, had a really good day today, made a nice wad of money, worked on some genuinly great tunes, spoke to some really nice happy customers, even got some tips

Then I got a PM via a music forum which I have advertised/discussed plug-ins etc on before tell me I am a shit engineer based on the fact I use a pair of KRK (VXT not Rokit) speakers, which he claimed "arnt set up properly" from a tiny wide angle picture on my site and an MBOX for my monitoring DAC (I don't I use a Benchmark DAC1).

Very wierd, never experienced someone having a proper go at me for no reason, still this is the internet and to be expected. Not really got me down, but I do feel the need to vent slightly.

But it did make me wonder, what's the most horrible thing anyones ever said about your studio and work? has anyone actually gone nuts in your studio?

I was helping some "friends" of a friend lay down some tracks as a favor. They never even pretended to be happy with the experience. They were tossing little trinkets I had on shelves around, mocking me when I would ask them if they were ready for a take, stepping all over my toes on almost every decision I was making, wanting to re-take everything until I was finally just out of time/patience. It was obvious they didn't even want the recordings, and I wasn't inclined to give them to them anyway given how unimpressed they were. I helped them carry a bass amp out to their car and they basically just split. When I went back in to shut everything down, I found that one of them (the singer or drummer, never found out which) had taken a dump on the floor and rolled my chair around in it.

It didn't happen to me and it was more wierd (and a bit scary) than rude, but my friend was recording a black metal band a couple of years ago and some of the cables he used (I think it was actually just power cables) in the studio were red. However, this band refused to record in the studio if there were red cables there, since they were not "evil" enough. They told him that he would have to switch them to black cables, or else they would be forced to kill him. My friend told them to either shut the hell up and play or get the f*** out of his studio. Fortunately, the band were all talk and no walk so they shamefully kept their mouthes shut for the rest of the session.

Well, I am reminded why I never really wanted my own commercial studio! I am happy doing live recordings and FoH where people are usually more civil... at least in my kind of music!

Whew, three messages and I can smell it from here...

Whoa, I didn't see that coming!! (obviously you didn't either)

I've had some nice people force me to work over time under the threat of violence.. it only ended up being an extra 30 mins, but really ****ed up my night..definitely uncomfortable working conditions wondering if that thing is loaded. He was jailed less than a month later on other outstanding charges..

Most of the people who's said nasty things to me, or about me(or my studio/work) are the same people who've gone out of their way to dick-ride and say the nicest (overkill) things. Funny, eh?

The thing that gets some people I've work for (and current work for..ughhhh) is that they don't understand some simple things.. "time is money" and "booking time means an appointment at my next free slot, NOT TODAY, simply because you feel like it"

Clients who've gotten everything they paid for and more, calling 6 months later wanting stems (for free, right now!) when I clearly explained to them what mix stems were at the time of their project, and asked whether they wanted them, to which they declined (they were on a budget, and I said they'd save money if I didn't have to print them)

Shit like that.. pretty common.

Some punk called me up and had the nerve to ask if I used Pro Tools.
We use Sonar 8 I said.

What do they care anyway. Like 1. They're gonna have to use it and 2. Like it sounds any different.

They should be worried about sample rate and bit depth. Now here, that's something to worry about.

But it doesn't smell like pee.

I haven't had many actually rude comments, most of the time if they're int he studio they're not jerks, but I also posted this one in "Gear that you let someone borrow and lost" thread, but it still pissed me off how rude these guys were.

Early on when I started my home studio a decent pair of headphones was "loaned" to a band to practice the click tracks we just recorded.

1)Never came back to record.
2)Never paid(the last time I trusted anyone on payment).
3)Never brought back my headphones.

Plus, after I received their dear john letter in an email I replied to them asking: "hey guys, the least you guys could do is drop off my headphones, they're not the cheap kind, they're actually kinda expensive"

they said "The least we could do? We wasted our money driving out to your studio (because they found a studio that would record their songs at $12/per song??) so we really don't owe anything to you, if you want your headphones back you can come out and get the headphones from us. (1-1/2 hour drive).

I love people.

I have a buddy that plays in a rockabilly band, and he wanted to do a solo album, but he's broke. He's a talented songwriter and musician, he travels in different circles than I do, and he's a pretty good friend; so, I figured I'd help him out to get his solo project rolling, and get my name out in a scene that I'm usually not around.

I agreed to record, mix, and (to the best of my ability) master his album... for FREE. The only conditions were:
1. He had to be patient with me, as I was going to screw around a lot, basically using him as a guinea pig to try some new techniques, etc.
2. He had to put in a good word with his rockabilly band, so I could potentially get the deal for their next album.

Well, he was very patient, and supposedly he's been RAVING about how great the album turned out... but...

I heard through the grapevine that he told the rest of his band that my studio was too small to record them... it's a 4 piece!

The next weekend I had his bass player come check the place out, and he was totally stumped as to what the problem was. Actually, he wants to know when they can get in to record a few sample tracks!

So, while I guess it wasn't super rude, it kinda hurt my feelings, being that I put so much out there to help a FRIEND; and that's what I got in return.

i don't record other people... just a hobby at home kinda guy... but this is unbelievable. not only the fact that someone took a crap on the floor... but just the outright stupidity of people...

when it comes to the clients in these stories: it ALWAYS blows my mind at how little people actually know.

...and the less they know; the more they speak.

great thread... enjoyed the stories! thanks!

There was a band that insisted on breaking my sheet music stands... Took a while to figure what band it was cause we had many rehearsals at same time.

But besides that, no big problems.

There was a guy that insisted that my 2610 was lame to record, despite of all i said about it. The discussion ended when he insisted in bringing his Presonus Tubepre... "the client is always right"

You find that a rude or unusual question? Seems pretty normal to me. In fact I think anyone running a studio NOT based around Pro Tools should get used that one. For better or worse Pro Tools is like Kleenex (or Hoover in the UK). The generic term for "DAW". Also he might have had legit compatibility concerns (like if they were mixing elsewhere).

i love the fact that they rolled the chair around in it... as if sh!tting on someone's floor isn't enough.

i can just imagine someone zipping up, stepping back to admire their handiwork, and thinking 'hang on a sec - i know what would really set this off...'

Don't underestimate the importance of a couch!

I had a session where two bass players were in attendance. The first bass player I tracked through a Robbie DI. Not a great bass DI, but not terrible. No noise, nice mids, decent lows. The next player comes in. He wants to track through his Radius into the mic input of the Robbie. I said it wasn't necessary as the Robbie has a built in DI (not to mention a higher quality one at that). We plugged it in the way he wanted, and there was some pretty heavy noise in the signal. So I said, I'd like to give it a shot using the Robbie DI, and his response was "You know I do this too." Meaning, he considers himself an engineer because evidently he tracks through his Radius at home. I switched the signal chain arround while he wasn't paying attention which got rid of a lot of the noise and improved the fidelity of the signal. Then I handed the session over to another engineer who was present and left. Next time, I'll just let him record himself. See if he can even figure out how to open Pro Tools.
