MIC HUM ? or XLR cable HUM ???

Hey there...

my PC, mixer, monitors....none of these project any kind of HUM sound.

but when i plug in my MIC and turn on the phantom...there is a bassy HUM that does not allow me to use high gains. Its there even with the phantom OFF. Seems like it kicks in as soon i plug in the XLR to the port.

My effects pedal connected to other channel does not create HUM so iam sure my mixer is fine.

unfortunately i dont have an extra mic or cable to step troubleshoot this.

but just wanted to know...is this a generally experienced problem ???
whose the culprit ?? the MIC or the XLR cable ????

thanks.

its an AKG 4000

btw...i seperated the XLR as it was BADLY tangled with the other signal and power cables..that made a slight difference..

at times when i reconnect and re-activate the phantom....it goes away.

sounds familiar to anyone.

also....this wierd thing has always happened..

with the mic plugged in...when i switch on the phantom...i hear this sort of RUMBLE/THUNDER/WINDY rolling sound as it powers up which goes away in few seconds....

its as if the sound of the phantom current reaching the mic to switch it on

anyone gets the same ???

my mic did this on both of my interfaces !

Do you have another cable to try?

If the sound from the microphone is fine other than the humming, I would say it's the cable. I'd try changing that first...

Hey, my mic (also an AKG) has the exact same issue. The rumble/thundery/windy sound will not go away, and is not present with any of my other mics, and does not dissapear if I change cables or preamps. Have you found a solution? I am dying to use this mic I just spent $1,000 on. I even sent it in to AKG and they said they could not find anything wrong with it.

I should note though, my rumble sound does not go away after a few seconds, it just lingers and lingers.

well bro
i would suggest basic t-shooting... such as trying another soundcard/mixer...cable...electric power supply source or devices in your chain

FYI...i use to get that rumble wind roar as soon as i put on the phantom on my portable sound card...which also runs on firewire power instead of an adaptor...so i'd like to think that small soundcards or low powered ones do that cos of current issues.... i no more have that issue using my full size firewire mixer board cos it runs on a dedicated power supply source...so my capsules get pure 100% uncrossed phantom power !

i do get a a/c hum at times.... but hum has nuffin to do with the mic... a little restart, repluggin n all and the problems goes away.

hope this helps u somehow.

and i recon storing mics in their cases....treat em like the most precious thing in the studio.... there can be alot of energies n factors effecting the capsules

handle it like nukes
