People who listen to "Ooh, anything, really!"

You know the type. They're everywhere. here's a recent conversation with one:

Me: Do you like music?
Him: Oh yes. I love music.
Me: Cool! What do you like to listen to?
Him: Ooh, anything really.
Me: (Eye twitching) Gaaah..
Him: You ok?
Me: Yes, fine. I'm just going to put some Slayer on - is that ok?
Him: Err, yes. I've never heard of them.

*CD Starts to play*

Him: Uuurgh! It's just noise and you can't hear the words!
Me: Oh, ok, I'll change the CD. How about some Steely Dan?
Him: Err, yes.

*CD Starts to play*

Him: Oh no! That music is very odd and is making me feel funny inside!
Me: Oh, righto. I'll change the CD again. How about some COMPLETELY BLAND POP MUSIC THAT YOU ARE USED TO BEING SPOONFED BY THE SODDING RADIO. (I'm shouting now!) OR WHAT ABOUT SOME SONGS THAT YOU FIRST LISTENED TO WHEN YOU WERE A TEENAGER AND STILL LIKE BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE THE MENTAL CAPACITY TO ABSORB NEW MUSIC BECAUSE YOU ARE ARTISTICALLY NUMB TO THE WORLD. (Foaming gently at the mouth here!) FACE IT - YOU DON'T LIKE 'ANYTHING REALLY' AT ALL. YOU LIKE WALLPAPER MUSIC, AUDIO SALAD, BUBBLEGUM FOR THE EARS. CALL IT WHAT YOU LIKE, BUT LIKE IT YOU DOOOOOOO!

That's got to be the worst driving lesson I ever had.

Jim

I once broke up with a girl after I heard her blasting out Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits. Rumours I might have survived, but that was the moment I knew it was never going to work.

Yeah, it makes me feel like a ****tard to say I listen to "anything", but the fact is, I do- I find as an audio engineer, a player of various instruments and a songwriter that it's pretty important to listen to anything and everything I can.

I don't care if it's even good, sometimes, I feel I can't afford to not listen to something that's either 1) popular for some reason, 2) something I might be lucky enough to be paid to work on or 3) a style I might be asked to emulate for some reason.

But I hate it when I am asked "What kind of music do you like?" Well, what kind of music do you like? Really? Just that one style? Out of all the thousands of years of music made in all the cultures that even existed, you shrewdly picked one- the best, I guess- and you're sticking to that?

I just like music. When I'm asked that, I just mention what I've been listening to lately, which has been the O'Jays and the Five Stairsteps, because I was drinking and I watched an infomercial about the boxed set of classic R&B- which I really love- and featured a lot of performances from Soul Train.

Yep. But what's suck is the guy who say he love everything when he's actually far to be as open as he think.

Most people don't have bad taste about music. They have no taste about music.

The OP make me lmao.

Girl:Oh you play in a band? I love live music. It is my favorite thing to do. I love all kinds of music.
me:Cool, well we should go to the Star Bar (local Alternative music place) and check out some music.
Girl:Oh never been there.
Me:No?? Ok how about the Earl? (another famous music club)
Girl:The Earl?? never heard of it.
Me:Ok what music clubs to you go to?
Girl:Oh I saw Train at Philips Arena not so long ago.

Good thing you were there to point out how you are way more into music then them. Glad you set them straight.

I like movies. Anything really. I will go see them. But if a local kid who makes films in his backyard corrected me because I didn't watch obscure movies like him, I would ignore it. I would feel bad that his is that lonely and finds joy in pointing that out to people.

I bet that same kid would go on a forum the next day to talk about how he set me straight and how ignorant I was about movies.

But if you said you liked any kind of movie and then it turned out you'd never heard of Hitchcock and the last film you paid to see was Die Hard 8, he might have a point.

Liking any kind of movie is not defined as seeing every one.

As I said, thank god there is someone like him to go around and put people in their place so they understand there are different levels of appreciation that are defined by his musical library.

It drives the point home more and puts him higher that instead of offering to build up exposure to different music he is there to point out his more extensive collection.

I am sure that person is now in awe of his most high level of musical exposure. Maybe almost as much as he has impressed himself, to the point of posting about it to strangers.

Infernal Device- had I known you were listening I would have refrained from posting as I know this is the sort of thing that upsets you. Sorry about that.

Can I just point out to anyone that might not have guessed that this is a JOKE, and the conversation did not actually take place.

Jeez.

PS - I don't care what anyone says though, it's still true.....

I often answer that question with "Whatever sounds good to me," because it's the most honest answer for me. I listen to all kinds of different stuff and usually don't want to get into a long conversation about it with someone who's only making small talk.

I seem to never have the "what kind of music do you like?" convo with people to whom it makes a difference. Ironic.

Was it Miles Davis that said...

There are only two kinds of music, good and bad.

Talking about music is like dancing about architecture.

..........

Who am I to argue with a genius.

sort of off topic but I often find myself really liking the demos that artists send off. And I know when the producer comes to me with a revised version I usually don't like it as much. I always want to say something to the artist, but that would be WAY unprofessional.
