I thought the title of the song was "The making of love is the thing".

And now, back on topic..

Just a bunch of guys publicizing and glamorizing a "trendy" idea in hopes of getting a mediocre song some more downloads.

They arent breaking any new grounds.

It was mixed in PT and by the looks of it, the vocals were redone through a real microphone.

5 stars for trying something "different", I suppose.

Sounds pretty darned good to me! I didn't want to like it, but it sounds good- and I'm sure no one would notice it was recorded using an iphone if it was on the radio or something

Reminds me of the whole "daniel bedingfield made his first hit in his bedroom" thing. He did a demo for it in his bedroom - the real thing was re-worked in a "proper studio".

Nothing new under the sun.

Sure it's a gimmick and a slightly lame song, but if those sounds actually were tracked with the internal mic on an iphone, surely someone apart from me could admit to being a little impressed, even begrudgingly so

Yeah i donno guys..... I call bullshit on this.

I am hearing alot of other small production ear candy that would be a huge pain in the ass to add in if you were only using 4 tracks.

For example go to 2:18 on the youtube video and you hear a little synth kind of "Chime" thing. You could say it came from the keyboard except the keyboard sounds like it is 7 feet away and he chime sounds like it is right up front.

Just to add that one part they would have had to bounce the mix and then move the keyboard (or the phone) and add it in.

Also during this part there is a clap track.... which it doesn't show them recording... which would require another bounce.

Im pretty sure around 2:52 there are both "OooOOO" and "AHHhhHhhH" so that alone would require 2 more tracks and more bouncing.

There is harmonies on some of the lead vocals 2:10 has a low harmony.

With all these layers we are talking about at-least 12 tracks (probably more).

Isn't it kind of weird that it shows 7 tracks in pro tools...not 4? 2:26
It showed him bouncing down tracks..... If it is so EASY to bounce down your tracks and still have an awesome sound then why would you have 7 tracks in pro tools?

I mean yeah they didn't say recorded and mixed on the i-phone.... So they could have used a bed track and every-time they recorded one thing, they loaded it into pro tools... however thats certainly not how they made the work flow look.

Personally I don't think any of this was recorded on the i-phone mic. If it was it would require SO MUCH time to find a good place to put the phone and a good place to put the instrument..... Which they may have done.... however once again thats certainly not what they are showing in the video.

I guess you can think about when Roland and YAMAHA and Fostex and Tascam started to make all those digital multitrack /mixer recording machines, such as the MR16, DP02, AW16-G........

All those machines although not as user friendly aren't IMPOSSIBLE to use, and are MUCH more capable then an iphone is, and although I am sure a handful of people have done great sounding recordings on these machines...... most people to try and record on them end up with a shitty sounding recording, and thats with the luxury of more tracks, more mics and once, better monitoring system, eq and compression at your finger tips..... hell alot of people can't even make a good recording with pro-tools or cubase.

If the average person can't do it on one of those machines they won't be able to do it on an iphone.

It's not even THAT groundbreaking...

There's a whole genre of music made by guys with their palm pilots...

No, the 4 track app allows you to bounce down 4 tracks to 2 (in a new session, so the old tracks are still kept separate).

I agree, there is a lot of cool music being made on palms, etc. They just haven't figured out how to market it yet. Apple certainly has.

Oh well that makes sense.... I take back everything I said in my last post....

Now all everyone needs is Pro-tools or another DAW (maybe even logic) to transfer there 15 wav files to, and they can record, just like those guys, on there iphone....oh wait don't forget to pick up a pro-track so you can use your apex condenser to track your vocals into your phone......... then you can just use pro-tools for mixing..... You don't have to worry about damaging your 003 pre's.

He begun experimenting and decided to try recording a song. After plugging in a regular microphone, he discovered that he actually preferred the sound of the iPhone mic.
I want some of the stuff he's smoking.

Actually, the 3g mic sounds pretty good, and has pretty darn flat response. There is another thread about it: The iPhone internal microphone

The 1st gen mic was very bad, and the new one is good but has a steep low end roll off to avoid plosives, but the 3g mic is considered by some to be good enough for measurement (at least on a radio shack level, if not better).

Regardless, I also call BS on this. Still, gimmicks keep the people coming, and it's a clever marketing technique.
