Now for my Zen comment - If you keep doing this you will get better at dealing with it. I used to get so distraught over a track not working or me not winning a competetive submission. Nowdays I just laugh it off and move on.
If you don't do that, eventually you stop putting too much of 'yourself' into the music, and become formulaic. You do this so it doesn't hurt when your music gets rejected, but it's a double edged sword because the bits of yourself you put into the music are what makes it special and unique to you, and what makes people want you to do the job.
Now in our field it's really hard not to take it personally, because we create something form nothing, and it comes from within ourselves. So if they reject our creativity it feels like they are rejecting us personally. The angle that helped me out was a restuarant analogy - Even though I have my absolute favourites, I don't eat there every night. (this helps when your favourite clients go work with someone else). Also if I don't like a meal I get, it's usually because there's a spice in there I'm not keen on etc. It's just a matter of my tastes, it has nothing to do with the Chef personally. I don't think he's a loser (unless it's terrible) or hopeless at his job, and there are other people who think the same meal is fantastic.
90% of the game is mental. You have to not care too much, while at the same time caring enough....

I'll never stop caring. I still want to add to our artform. In the future, f**k it. I didn't get paid at all for this BTW, it was on my own time.

No I mean, I'll just keep doing what I'm doing. F**k the director and us unprofessionalism. Next stop, demo reel.

I definitely thought your song was not only a better song, but more appropriate for the feel of the video. Your's wins in my book. However, we should have never seen it.

Just watched both videos. Nice music on both, but what struck me is that your timing of the music is a little ahead of the timing in the video.

For example, starting at about 20 seconds- in if you look at the timing of your back-beat against the completion of the post-it images, yours hits a little too early in my opinion. The timing of the other persons music seems to align perfectly with the transitions in the video. This is what the director may have been trying to say but didn't know how to put it into words.

I watched yours first; so had I not been comparing, I probably wouldn't have been critical of the timing and just enjoyed the nice vibe you composed for this creative video. But in comparing the 2, this is what I felt.

Comparison is a bitch! Just my opinion.

Wow. I worked on something for an extended period of time and contributed work (some that was used, and some that was scrapped) for this little video. I have the right to be upset that my efforts went unappreciated, and to look for support from my fellow audio engineers and such on this website.

Thank you for the most useless post this thread has seen so far. Thank You!

To the previous poster comparing the two...In the original version of the video, my music was synced up perfectly, but because the director kept changing the picture, (the version on youtube is about 15 seconds shorter than what I scored to.) My soundtrack became more and more out of sync, also a bit of a pain. I do see what your saying though. Thanks for viewing the both and giving me your opinion, that's what I wanted from this thread, to see some real input from guys who know what they're talking about. Not some guy abbreviating my talent and effort into simply...

"You didn't do anything, stop crying."

Everything ends up a fight on these boards.

get used to it! It's how the industry works. Talent? that's not for you to say. Plus talent is ten a penny..... there are a lot of moderately talented people around!!! Hard work and being able to fit a job is the trick..... move on. Do your next job.

Hey I'm fine. In the 2 weeks since the whole ordeal, I premiered a film I did the sound for (got a great response.) and am working with children at a radio camp (which is tons of fun.) I'm great, was just a pissed pissed off about the film but it happens. Thanks for all the input though!
