Biggest dissapointment/waste of money

Hey Slutz, Whats your biggest disappointment in terms of a purchase? What have you had high regard for and it just hasn't met your expectations? Has it been on the recommendation of somebody else?

It could be hardware, software, Plugins, Keyboards/synths, Mic's etc?

I know you will say that you should always try before you buy but everybody at some point is in a situation where try before buy simply isn't an option?

I wasn't impressed by roger nichols bundle, The compressor is not very nice and all the plugs are far to complicated for everyday use, this is only my opinion.

Lets hear yours?

My Genelec's 8030 apm, thought they'd be much more than they are. The sound quality is excellent but they just kill my ears, I compared them to the adam a7 and although they are cheaper I prefer them muuuuuuccccchhh moreeee!!!

Grace Design m101...I saved and sold a lot of stuff to buy that pre and It sounded just as good as my art mpa gold. It was a nice pre but very over rated I think!! IMO

I would say one of my favorite things as well as a big disappointment was my Orange Rockerverb 50. Beautiful amp, but shortly after buying it, the reverb circuit died on it. So no reverb, but the reverb knob did create a weird filter effect when twisted. I have now read that this was a major problem with these amps.

TL Audio CI preamp/compressor. This unit is proof that Sound on Sound magazine will give anything a great review.

I bought a Fender Twin Reverb that sounded fantastic for about 3 weeks and stopped working - couldn't get it fixed, so I returned it, got sent out a silverface that barely kept up with the band turned up to 10 on all gain pots.... returned that, spent the money on my rent. Ampless. Bummer.

Motu Machfive2....the most useless un-intuitive software sampler i've used (and i've used a few!)...not to mention Motu's pathetic attempts at keeping it compatible

About 100 different guitar pedals I've owned have sucked. Biggest disappointment was probably the Korg Radias. Way to make the MS-2000R into a $1000+ yawnfest, Korg.

grace pre, rnp, behringer pre, focusrite pre, quest guitar (it was cheap, it was the 80s, it seemed good for 45 minutes in the store), cheap headphones (name yer brand), apex condensor mics, every single "studio" spring reverb I've ever bought in my entire life, dunlop crybaby, boss stereo chorus(ssssssss), squire bass (could make it sound good but what an effort), behringer di-20 or whatever their little portable active di box is called (compared to the bdi21 which is insanely amazing for the price), apex 180 mics (mxl 603... I just hate 'em, sorry guys but I do), yorkville ysm-1 passive monitors, I don't like ns10s and I don't like ysms for the same reason... treble from hell...great monitors, just not for me at all.

I'm sure there's more but that'll do.

cheers,
Don

not necessarily good piece to begin with, but M-Audio 410. just cheap plastic sound. Presonus Firebox is WAY better in terms of price range. also USB mics are buzzy.

That doesn't sound like any Twin Reverb I ever played. Assuming it's a real-deal an not some look-alike PCB design junk.

maybe powercore compact by TC it is a good unit but I have never really gotten any use out of it because of stability issues

Voicemaster Pro.

Sold a John Petrucci Ibanez P4 for it. I've been kicking myself since, considering I ditched the Voicemaster a while ago and would still be playing that P4 today.

Exactly... it was definitely a real-deal Twin but yeah quiet as sh*t and way distorted...

Sounds like a bias problem. Excessive bias voltage shutting the output tubes off too long and biasing the amp into Class B, with a significant notch at zero crosing. This will cut the power and produce a nasrt sounding nonharmonic distortion almost akin to aliasing (both are related to IM distortion) All forms of nonharmonic distortion are pretty obnoxious, even in relatively small amounts. The biasing problem will also sound worse at lower levels, where it can sound really "grainy"....

+10 on the Genelec 8030..My ears were sore after a week with these things and that was playing back mixes from top talent.

I don't get it but I suspect a little bit of "The emperor's new Cloths" here.

Sorry, but overpriced comes to mind.

Second is Dynaudio BM15A...They sucked as well only because of a huge midrange scoop and low end boost.
I should have bought the BM6 and added a sub.

I prefer my Event ASP8 to both of the above and yes my room is treated and quite flat.

focusrite platinum series preamps, i had the voicemaster (wack) and the octopre (ok for remote recording at clubs) ...i still have the voicemaster but it collects dust on craigslist, cuz nobody wants that POS. I also HATED a pair of rokit powered KRK monitors I ditched a while back, they were nice for listening to Itunes on my computer, and thats about it.
