I suck

...its one of those days that no matter what I do sucks...

how often do you guys get these?...

I am happy with the mix in my room, then instead of trusting my ears I go and listen to it in the car and a couple more systems and I hate it..I go back and change it and then play it in the car - it sounds good...pop another cd in there I know sounds good, and it sounds crap in the exact same way my first mix did! So the original mix was the best...why don't I trust my monitors (which I love)?...

...now the funny thing is that I am no rookie...but it doens't matter!!! Once in a blue moon it always happens.

Anyway...today, I suck

I get these all the time (songwriting suck days) then I think to myself well, my songs suck compared to the beatles anyways so why bother.. so I feel proud of how much I suck. After feeling good about myself for a few minutes, I get depressed and write another song, and the cycle starts again.

In other words! Like Cajones said.. take a break, do some excercise, watch TV. : ) and suck away hahaha

It's amazing how quickly I one-eighty on a mix - loving it one minute - hanging my head the next. I need to learn to not touch it unless I have a deadline - otherwise I dwell and lose all perspective. In other words - I feel your pain. Have some cookies, read a book, breathe.

To console you I thought I'd revive this thread . Compared to that hoover-fest, your momentary brain fart is not even in the same time zone...

Feel better now?

That's when you call up one of the pimps and drop a couple K on gear. You feel better right away.

Careful now... Our ears tend to be more forgiving of the flaws that show up on our stereo systems when we are listening to a "professionally done" record. Our brains block out a certain amount of sonic wierdness before we start noticing things we don't like. On our own mixes however, we can only hear the problems 'cause after all, isn't that why we're listening in the car? Mastering can have an effect on that too. But it is miniscule.

BTW, you don't save your mixes?

Actually thats a very good point. Once a product is finalized you accept it for what it is.

I do this "trick" that can be scary but always helps me see through someone else's great mix...while I listen and I think everything sounds amazing, I look at the faders in front of me and imagine that what I am hearing is coming out of my PT rig...I visualize the tracks in my screen and I can change anything...SUDDENLY this awesome mix collapses into pieces! The vocal is too thin, too bright, the guitars are too low, no snap on the snare...you get my point...

So...the challenge is to be able to zoom out and listen to your mix as a consumer. As a done product.

I go through that cycle every so often. I just feel like I'm going backwards and why bother trying to do this ect..ect..ect..

Usualy I just need a break to get some perspective. Basically what everyone else has said

Also I think about how bands that I like and / or have recorded before will often come back to do there next record with me. I figure there must be something I'm doing that they like. That helps.

Glad to hear your over the hump.. for now...
