I read that the Aerosmith Guitar Hero game made the band more money than ANY of their records yet.
Pretty impressive amount of loot considering how many copies Pump sold back in the 90's.

Unless they have some kind of new magic technology to separate 2/4 track tapes into separated drum/guitar/bass/vocal tracks, all the songs are going to be covers :(

This is a great point. Look at how many kids are getting into Rock because of this silly game.

I bet in 20 years we are talking about how this game saved Rock and Roll.
No joke.

Sooner or later I'm going to have to have a play on Rock Band or Guitar Hero or whatever.

And if I can't do it, I WILL throw a hissy fit.

I tried, and I totally suck. Kids half my age are better.

I also read some funny anecdote about Slash. Apparently, Slash was over at some friend's house where his friend's son said to him "Hey, you look like that guy from Guitar Hero." He then dared Slash to session, and Slash lost; playing himself; on an xbox. If that's not hyperreality!?

However cool these games are, as previously mentioned they are the real musicians bane and the cause of immense embarrassment. Without sticking my head too far up my arse, I class my self as a good guitarist. I know there are those my age and better, younger and better, but I still know I have some talent. And its just utterly embarrassing when other people regard you as a great guitarist, ask you to play them on Guitar Hero, and you just fail and fall on your arse so quick its as if you were trying to avoid a catholic priest.

I was walking down the street once and saw this teenager with a guitar slung over his shoulder. I always try to show support for the young musicians. So I say to him, "you gonna play that thing or are you just wearing it for show." He says, "oh, its not a real guitar, its for a game, you know guitar hero."

As much as I'd like to believe the games would be an entrance into music etc. and I'm sure that's how they sold the guys on doing it (not to mention the hefty $$$$), at the end of the day I think the game will be enough cool factor for the youth. Actually learning to play would be a waste of time.

Who is surprised by that? The Beatles doing anything to make money. Not news.

Every time someone finds a recording of them tuning guitars in the studio it is released for $18.99 (and usually just in time for Christmas).

The Beatles are just a themed gift for people. My aunt always gets "cat-related" gifts for holidays, by uncle gets "Beatles" themed gifts.

It is the same with NASCAR and whatever Disney movie is released (for them just to abandon it and promote the next).

I am only surprised it took them this long.

How bout making a game where you actually have to LEARN how to play the guitar like Paul McCartney instead of pushing some green and blue buttons?? That's why kids don't know shit these days...

Well, instead they could be playing a game where they fire shots into people's heads. I'd rather have my kids playing Guitar Hero...

they certainly did - the buy-in was huge. The sales were not, at least not as huge as they were supposed to be!!

As for the "guitar hero"/"singstar" tracks - very often they ARE accurate sound-a-likes. I've been involved in quite a couple of them at SCEE. Sometimes they are replays by the original artists (Sex Pistols) and yet other times they are master-track (these days PT clones) read in (Elvis was one I remember !! NDAs all around THAT week!)

In an interview I read a while ago, the guitar player from Weezer had the same experience.

Here's a clip of Rush sucking at playing Tom Sawyer in Rock Band, and not looking very amused by it.

Most of my drum students were inspired to start taking lessons by Rock Band.
All of them have stuck it out for at least several months and are improving at a normal to advanced pace.
There is nothing inherently bad about these music games. Nothing any worse than the potential abuse of video games in general. Quit belly aching, you old farts.
Evolve or die. If you feel threatened by a damned video game...

I agree..the technology of these games nowdays is to a point where you can give a kid a real guitar, or some sort of midi controller and teach him how to play...

BUT...I have the game...and I love it...it rocks..nice distraction when you need to step away from the studio...

I think some of you are taking it waaaaaaay too personal..its just a game dudes lol, it's not meant to be real...and if you suck at this game...it has nothing to do with playing ability or realism..it has to do with u being old with very bad reflexes from years of pot smoking
