Don't double feature "SlumDog Millionaire" and "The Wrestler" back to back

Likely the most depressing night I ever had, SlumDog from 7pm to 9pm and Wrestler started at 9:30pm. My friend and I on the way home could not talk about anything much except wow...yeah wow...

Both Great movies, but yeah...Not a great double feature. Reminds me of when my family went to see Munich a couple years back on Christmas day. Big Mistake. LOL

Just saw "Slumdog Millionaire" last night, and "The Wrestler" a few days back.

To finish off with "The Wrestler", does not put you in the most optimistic mood, but "Slumdog Millionaire" is great a message of hope...

Nevertheless enjoyed both movies.

it's only a message of hope, if you ignore the actual REALITY of the situation in mumbai...

...and the future for most of the featured "characters"...
(check back with them in 2 years, and see where they are then).

I heard that one of the two little actors during the first half of the movie got slapped by his father upon return to the slums. He wanted to sleep after being tired from the flight from LA, but his father didn't let hem. I saw some pics of that. Anyway, they have been given a house now, I read somewhere?

Doing a double feature with any of the academy- nominated films this year would be depressing. I think Wall-E was the only "uplifting" movie of the lot...

How can everyone think "Slumdog" is depressing?

Yes as a spectator we witness horrible things (poverty, exploitation, name it al, Mumbai reality...). But at the end Jamal has the girl and the prize. Sometimes the road is quite rocky for any outcome in life.

Its not the fall that counts, its the landing. He had a good landing...

Even though the story takes place in bombay, i think most messages in any great work of art has a universal value.

True, most of the actors were amateurs from bombay, and who knows where they'll be in 2 years, but i feel that it is irrelevant to the appreciation of the movie's message.

It's the things that he and his brother and friends are subjected to, it just piles onto you emotionally, the ending didn't make me feel much better from what the movie puts you through up to that point. It was very much a true downer for me.

Mickey Rourke is the man in anything he does, and he just nailed that part. I was impressed with the efficiency of the story and how it is always straight to the point with no distractions.

Those who say Slumdog is not depressive... you have never been to India. It is not the "landing" that matters, it is a vicious circle there, this film being one of the rare occasions in mainstream art to almost "smell" it. It IS that bad and worse. Corruption, no hope, ignorance, poverty, violence, dirt, etc.

I can understand why Bollywood produces films like this one:
YouTube - Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi - Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai With Subtitles In DVD Quality

that are indeed uplifting, to the degree of oblivion. And also why many Indians, especially the privileged and sheltered middle class didn't like Slumdog.

One side of India: Monitor Room / YRF STUDIOS – Soundproof and air-conditioned Film Studio of Yash Raj Films & Yash Chopra in India. Shooting Floors, Sound Stages, Studio on Hire Rent, Indoor shootings, Audio & Video Recording Theatre, Post Production, Dubbing, Foley, Tracking, Film

And the other:

http://monkeysmashesheaven.files.wor...y-in-india.jpg

Well, there is such polarisation all over the world, but rarely it is so brutal and on such small distances/relations as in India. Extreme wealth and extreme poverty exchange on the same street, ten meters from the most fancy shopping mall to the crippled beggars living on the street.

Ignorance is not bliss and corruption corrodes their society.

You can also witness one fact there - we all, the "western" hemisphere live on historic and current exploatation of the third world, we don't see it from our sheltered perspective, but it hits you once you come there. It is evident. And it could be sensed in Slumdog Millionaire, despite its bollywoodesque twist... but the follow up and all the stories about those kids show exactly that vampiric attitude. Outsourcing, exploatation, unfair wages, using corruption of their system, the chaos that enables dubious and damaging projects - like Pepsico and Coca-Cola selling drinks with high levels of pesticides there, etc. Nobody cares, there are millions of "worthless people" there to exploit and it is happening, and that film only hints at that. The reality is worse.

------------

Just to add a more bright side - Indians really do understand sound. Their musical culture is amazing. It is even evident in their mainstream movies - just check the high level of production in current Bollywood movies, also the OST for Slumdog is amazing and it was also done by an Indian, a very talented Mr.Rahman.

The first half of Wall-E is soul sucking depressing people. I barely made it through that part!

Wrestler isn't depressing? It's a realistic look at someone's life and the choices he makes. He is a Wrestler. It's in his soul and in his hands. We are born to do something and that's the world he feels most comfortable in.

You gotta balance that shit out man. My wife and I went with:

Slumdog --> Milk

Then last week it was:

The Wrestler --> The Foot Fist Way
