Autotune at American Music Awards

It sounded like Kanye West was either lightly vocoded or autotuned during his live performance last night at the AMAs. Did anyone notice this or anything else about any of the performances?

Kanye is a terrible singer, but on his new album I'm pretty sure there is no rapping and all singing. All auto-tuned for that "new effect".

We know the Jonas Brothers dont use this after hearing Joe Jonas struggle last night...

It's actually to bad because he is usually right on?

I think he should have been a comedian....he's pretty amusing. He looks funny, acts funny, says funny things. It would make much more sense to me.

I'm not sure there's a less talented and more successful person in the history of music.

Of course, people probably said the same about Elvis...

I heard that Kanye said he's the Michael Jordan of the music business. Delusions of grandeur.

It sounded to me like the autotune track was playing along with the background track.
It was making all those "autotune side effects" in all the right places and sounded too right to be done live. You could occasionally hear them mix in his live mic over it, making it sound like a real person, for a second.

Even if Joe Jonas sucked bad, kudos from me for at least trying to be a real live act. God knows, I sure saw lots of out of tune singers in the old days.

That EXACTLY the point. All the people attacking the Jonas Brothers are going after the wrong people. Its the Kanye's that are the ones ruining the music industry, not the Jonas Brothers or even Miley Cyrus for that matter. There act is 100 percent live and almost completely written by themselves except for some minor arrangement adjustments.

Well that's sort of the sad thing...this game of whether people can sing or not, whether they're on pitch...I mean how is that fun or entertaining...might as well watch a game show like Idol.

The fact that someone doesn't use autotune or if they write their own stuff...so what? All The Jonas Bros proved is they don't really deserve to be where they are...they're not very good. If this were the 60s, even The Monkees would blow them off the stage.

miley cyrus doesn't write her stuff or sing concerts live.

Well, according to YouTube's 15 year old mileyfan1065, "thats because you have a bad tast in music over a million of people like taylor swift if you think she sucks why did you watch the video any ways"

How can anyone argue with that?

Actually I thought that NKOTB could have used some autotune or maybe rather some vocal lessons?! I thought their performance was pretty horrible

Ill start y saying I love popmusic but I kinda wish The Jonas Brothers didnt write their own stuff (they obviously have talent) but They could be incredibly good if they co-wrote some tunes with some of the big guys.
Kick-arse production by Fields but I was very dissapointed with the songs on their record.

Anyway, back on topic....

The Jonas Bros were so off the charts bad I actually felt sorry for them. I think it's a really bad joke that we are supposed to respect them because they have the nuts to perform live, showing everyone without a shdow of a doubt how bad they are. The fact is that they are freaking bad. And that should be the basis for whether or not to respect them. I'm pretty sure Annie Lennox didn't have A-T either.

There are so many great bands out there that don't need that shit AND can play. They aren't packaged cutely so they remain on the scrap heap.

This thread will devolve into the "music industry sucks" argument shortly but it's true andthis crap is the most telling evidence. It has never been more "how you look not how you play" than it is now. The music is secondary. But it's always been that way if you think about it. I'm sure the Doors wouldn't have been as big as they were if Jimbo was some non-discript nerd. As it was, he was this insane, compelling, supermodel type wacko who you couldn't look away from.

Ah who knows. Bottom line, if you're not playing for yourself, you're never gonna be anything anyway. And if you're doing it for the money, you're an idiot.

I can't remember the last time I walked away from one of those awards shows psyched about where we're going in the music industry. But I can tell you that after watching Annie Lennox, I am even more saddened about where the trend seems to be going.

I'm not defending Kanye because he's completely and arse, but P Diddy has him trumped on the "no talent...lots of success" category.

No I'm not kidding. I said "lightly vocoded" or "autotuned." Do you think it was heavily vocoded? Or did you misunderstand my post and then shout at me?

What about Annie Lennox saddened you? At the time, I thought her performance was the highlight of the show. What did I miss?

A funny aside...while watching Beyonce perform, my girlfriend says: "Hey, she's not even singing! She's just gyrating her booty and showing the world that she knows how to f**k! Her Mom must be proud." And I'm thinking to myself - "Yeah but pay attention!"
