New Nickelback Dark Horse

Anyone hear the album yet? Great mix by Shipshape, but the direction of the band has totally changed in my opinion. I swear every song I listen too I hear the drummer from Def Leppard.

And that's a bad thing?? I welcome the change. They're listenable now

I agree with you about them being more listenable, however they lost their identity in my opinion. Mutt Lange's work with Brian Adams for instance did not do that to him. He has a consistency to his sound, but Nickelback...I don't know. Great recording though, would love to know what they used.

Mixed feelings about this one.

I love Mike's mix. In fact I think all the mixes are good. Of course, as before, there are a lot of samples, but so what? What really surprised me is that I don't hear as big a single as the last record and I would have thought that with Mutt involved that would be a given. I hear good songs but I dont hear a number one.

The thing that really bothers me about this band is Chad Kroeger's lyrics. He just sounds like rapist! All his songs are quite aggressively sexual. Not in a sort of Aerosmith 'we screw a lot of chicks' way either. I'm not saying that Chad or the band ARE like that (!), it's just that there's something weird about some of the scenarios in their songs.

I actually thought his lyrics floated between overly sexual (Like that "Figured You Out" song... ) and way too much like adult comtemporary "Flaccid rock" lyrics set to nu-metal hooks (Like "Far Away" and "Feeling Too Damn Good" and "If Everyone Cared")

Regardless. I really can't stand all but one or two of their songs.

Mutt Lange's Mixes...

Guarantee every drum has at least 3-5 samples stacked and there's a synth bass which 'Mutt' likes for a more focused, punchy and assertive bass in the bottom that won't compete with his kick samples. Heck, he actually made Shania sound good...

Also, read this, Mike Shipley talks a bit about working with 'Mutt'....if you've never read this article....here, learn something and go get creative...

The mixes do sounds pretty stellar.
I do think the snare drum sounds like a " shania" sample:-)
It definately smacks in context though.
I think that the bottom end is a good reference on this record.....its big, but not too big.
Not a fan of the band, but, for that commercial extremely polished sound (mix wise) its a benchmark reference.

I admit Nickelback sounds better but now Mutt has turned them into a sing song band as well, ok i have only heard one song so i could be wrong.

are you guys serious? i know im a newb here but this sounds like pretentious shit... it's so over produced

I actually don't mind the song, and being a Canadian nickle back has ruined radio here ... I think maybe i just dislike modern mainstream production. It doesn't sound like humans playing music...

Ill take the new kings of leon record ...

something in your mouth is just an outright awful song. gotta be somebody is a pretty decent song though...

Suffice it to say that Mike went above and beyond on this record.

It totally sounds like it too. Amazing work!!!

iTunes'd it ... ugh ... sounds like late Def Leppard... yikes. Never liked a minute of this band, still don't.

For some killer Canadian rock ... go find yourself some I Mother Earth (R.I.P.)

Dark Horse (Nickelback album - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Looks like Shipley mixed one song.

Albums sounds like a Shania Twain meets Def Leppard record to me....

Bummer

Bummer they have to chop up and sample the drummers takes. Nickelback's current drummer is daniel adair, and he is an exceptional drummer. here's his live solo: YouTube - Daniel Adair Solo

According to the credits, Mike Shipley mixed track 10, 'If Today Was Your Last Day'.
Other mix credits go to Randy Staub, Joey Moi and CLA. Interestingly, producer credits go to Mutt, Nickelback and Joey Moi.

I went out to the cd store today to buy it. I'm not a Nickelback fan, only know one or two of their songs from the radio but this album sounds incredible. Chad sounds a lot more melodic than other songs I've heard and the band sound incredible. A big, deep sound is how I would describe it.

To me, Nickelback music is nothing more than a bunch of sissies from canada trying to prove that they like girls

I would bet Mutt got songwriting credits - The last record RJL did without a song writing credit was Back in Black - I bet he is still kicking himself over that one.

I just can't stand it.

The lead singer said something about stopping when they ran out of inspiration and started relying on cliches.
I wonder how they ever got started?....
