The studio I'm working on is a multi room studio. 30 by 40 foot control room. 18 foot high ceiling. Huge control room. Pro sound proofing, absorbers etc. Great gear but still building it up more as I go along.

Previously produced all my bands albums that have done pretty well around the world and now as I'm not really doing that much anymore I wanted to still be involved in music so I decided to have my own studio. Not for my own ego,try to get rich etc. Just because I love being in the studio (always have) and would like to try and help other bands dreams come true s mine never really did. Simple as that really.

To the guy that think LA is the best (not sure if your just messing with people) your right and wrong. LA is freaking awesome, always will have music history but the utter shit coming out of it right now is nothing to brag about.

Nashville, LA, NY you gotta respect for the things these cities have done but the rest of the world is just as talented. Just nobody has given it the same attention. Oh Abbey Road ring a bell?

Saying that I still wish I was in LA. Not for business. The sun, the beach, The people etc etc. Home is where the heart is.

The Melvins live in LA and play small venues like the Troubadour. That alone makes it the rock capital of the world in my book.

doooooot!!!!
i didnt go to france for music or anything...just vacation.
I know hip hop is big in france, but its their own brand of hip hop.
Only works in france. French rapping.
If i dont speak french i aint gonna feel it there.... scene or no scene.

american hip hop is world wide recognised and played.
america is the only place in the world that can make authentic/decent hip hop.
Must be something in the air.

It's something in the streets. Real bangin, real slangin. No joke. I'm a Rock guy but have been engineering Hip Hop recently.

What America has a harder time with is producing good Dance music. Europe still has us beat in every way when it comes to that.

Hmm, I will give a very short list: Linkin' Park (one of the most successful bands of all time), Maroon 5, 311, Incubus, Hoobastank, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Audioslave, Rage Against the Machine, Beck, Tool, System of a Down, Black Eyed Peas, Mars Volta, and Weezer..most of these bands are huge epic American rock bands that have made a dent in the music industry. This is only a partial list as well.

LA is a lot of hype, but it's a matched hype. Unfortunately, most bands that do make it out in LA are bands that grew up together..not usually the transplants that come out and are wannabees.

I don't think the beat is terrible, but it doesn't sound like the same beat that was on before he set the can down. And people aren't into those beats right now. Maybe there'll be a resurgence like Dre re-popularized Funk.

Audioslave? Are they still going? I thought that they just had the one album back in like 2000?

Come to think of it in that list I would say Maroon 5 are the only band that recently - ish got kinda big.

I can't think of a band from LA that has come out in the last 2 years that has made a big impact. But I am tired and might be forgetting someone.

The only reason why most bands come out of LA is from all the Record companies, Promoters, agents etc and the whole glam that goes with Hollywood etc. I'd imagine most of them are not even from LA but moved there for those very reasons.

Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking it all but for people that say LA is the best, well that's just because that's where the best go to make it. Talent is everywhere.

very very true...i agree with most of that...
to me, if a german band goes to LA to record their album, then that album is an LA album....alot of people from all over just go to LA to record. this adds to LA's history.

yes talent is everywhere and from everywhere. But the odds are higher to find talent going about their business in LA...

Big fish in small fishbowl or....

Small fish in a big sea?

That's the difference.

In LA you are competing with major label rock star bands, not the local talent.

That's the difference.

You maybe the shit where you are now, come to LA and you ain't anything.

It's most humbling.

But also truly challenging.

Being forced to step up your game can/could be one of the best things that's ever happened to you.

Otherwise, just stay where you are and be the biggest thing in your local town

This constant discussion is funny. It's like my buddy says 'if you have to ask if it's God's will, chances are it's not'. The fact that this question lives and is always relevant answers itself. YES! Nowhere on earth is more high end professional music made then LA. Nowhere!!! Not Nashville, not New York, not London. This is it. Is this a hard place to break and live and drive and deal with bullshit. YES! But if you stick it out you got a shot at something. Not that you can't have success in other markets but nothing touches this town. Considering the trend of everyone trying to get their music in film and tv because the music business sucks makes LA even more 'The Place'. This town is film and tv heaven, NY and Nashville don't even exist on the same planet as LA when it comes to syncing music to film, anyone tells you they do is full of shit and living in a fantasy world.

I see your point and I'm aware you are not quoting me but someone else, but no matter where I'm at in the WORLD, if I am making great tracks for a garage band that pays the bills or helping a band go forward in the music world is ok with me, its called BALANCE.......
The guys in LA may be recording record label talent (which from what I see there is NO talent on the scene today that I like) Jonas Brothers ? give me a break !!! The guys in LA are paying out the ass in rent or owning a place not to mention sinful taxes, when ours is pocket change in a way. I'm happy and I hope you are..
Peace.

LA is A BIG city.

Jonas Brothers? They probably never walked down an LA street w/o some apprehension.

Never the less, of course you don't have to BE here.

But, the stakes are higher....for bands, and the like.

If you can hang here, you can hang ANYWHERE

Guys this is getting stupid. Yes LA has all the flash shit. Movies are made there bla bla bla.

I'm telling you one thing right now. I have been in my band for 10 years and in the last 5 years I haven't once felt I needed to step up my game listening to another band coming from LA.

Bands I'm into lately. The used -Utah, Escape the fate - Vegas - Madina Lake - Chicago, Slipknot - Iowa, Story of the Year - St. Louis, All American rejects - Oklahoma, The Killer - Vegas, Kings of Leon - Nashville, Paramore - Tennessee, Underoath - Florida, the list goes on and on and I think there might be one that's come from LA and that list is not even counting bands from the rest of the world. If LA has raised the bar then it must be the Limbo cause lately it's pretty freakin low.

Just to mention, Yes that list is pretty much all rock (which is my main thing although I like pretty much everything) so excuse my for missing out all the great hip hop etc.

Also I think probably one of the biggest Rock bands to come out lately would probably go to Fall Out Boy - Illinois

But so many of those bands records are made in LA. Gearslutz is a site primarily for engineers and producers not rockstars. Yeah go to the one city that one of those bands came out of and wait for the next one.....zzzzz

The big KROQ concert this summer is headlined by Tool and Linken Park, both LA bands and co-headlined by AIC which was a band that played LA before breaking big, I know I opened up for them. Their demo was being run up and down LA. Next week I'm going to see Incubus, another LA band. Now I know Incubus and Tool are not as great a band as Fall Out Boy... Ooooops.

Who cares. How many people on this thread make a full time living as a pro? That I'd like to know, to qualify peoples opinions. I haven't had a real job in nearly 15 years, if I was living in a satellite city I'm not sure I could say that. I grew up in Florida, yeah they had some big bands come out in the 90's but the area as a whole still sucks for music.

Later
James

p.s. And for the comment regarding film and tv bla bla bla. You have that luxury. Go into a meeting with that attitude and they will laugh at you, it's fantasy. Film and TV is one the only vehicles left for bands. Most all labels look to music placement to fund young bands. It's a big thing. I have spent the past 2 years working on a daily basis with and for American Idol, when you want to talk serious then we'll talk but if you just want to bullshit around on a forum I'm busy.

The biggest setback for the LA music scene was the downfall of indie 103.1

Other than public radio, LA has no radio outlet for up and coming local talent.

Well if I'm into a band, I don't care if they are from LA or some shit hole at the end of the earth, where they are from or recorded is useless. Does that sell more records because a artist is from LA, Atlanta or France ?, I have no idea where bands I like are from or where they have recorded. Speaking of somewhere BIG, well I have never been into the vibe of the BIG city, I'm between Charlotte and Atlanta, hate Charlotte but I love Atlanta, its just big enough...hate traffic though, you can have that shit. Hey where I'm from is the land of Jackyl....lol, friends of mine.

Seems a little naïve of some to assume there is always a "scene".

Apparently many have failed to pay attention to the reality of the music business.
The reality is that it doesn't exist in the way it had before.

In LA right now the "scene" is called TV/Film licensing.
Music supervisors are the new A&R firms.

The conversations that I hear everyday are not "Can we get a record deal?" but instead "Can we get this song placed?"
I've been very fortunate to make a living in TV/film.

Get with it people.

Doesn't matter where you are.
Though as it is now, if you aren't in LA you may as well be in the middle of nowhere.

If you want to be a dairy farmer then move to Wisconsin.
