Pro Tools 6.9 auto mode "auto join" requires ethernet control surface - #$%&*!

hi. i am really upset with digidesign. maybe im not being fair but whatever. i downloaded PT 6.9 happily as i am thrilled about the new automation mode "auto join" . if this does what i think it does , it is a rollback join style mode like on an ssl g+ automation. i have always loved vca style automation. digidesign tells me that the only way it can be used in 6.9 is if i have an ethernet control surface. being that all i have is a brand new command 8 ( new technology from digi right? ) which is a midi controller , i am totally hung out to dry. unless there is a technical reason that i dont understand , this seems to be a very mean spirited thing digi is pulling on us - once again holding us hostage and trying to milk us of all funds and buy an expensive controller. sorta like when they released their Impact compressor plug-in , but it required an accell card upgrade. man. and the plug was the worst anyway. cheapest new technolgy control surface is a d-command ( i think around $11K U.S.). or i could get an old school technology control 24 with its 4 letter scrible strip. still those are overpriced. its just wrong - holding out on beat detective in LE was one thing - but this is just one single automation mode. one that is vital to the way ive missed working for so long when ITB.
rant over

annoying alright... but not surprising - they've been using these 'strategies' for years...

It's no good, I agree.

But Digi's pushing their pro division to such an extent that you just
know Apple's up to something..........

My current HD rig is my last big Digi purchase, I predict.

Digi is a hardware company first and foremost.
The only way to keep the money rolling in is to create these forced upgrades.
There was absolutely no reason to not support the Digi 001 anymore, but they dropped it from their support list.
Their lame excuse was the card wouldn't work on the new G5's.
So, have an exchange at a minumum cost to replace the PCI card. MOTU did.
And funny how UAD-1 cards, technology that's over 5 years old, can still be used without a problem in any computer?
And what about the huge numbers of non-G5 and PC users?
Overnight the 001 was turned into an outdated piece of junk. Needlessly.
And why do they keep pulling this nonsense? Becausee they can.

Yep. That's the kind of company I want to put my money in.

Now let's see if this particular user learns from this.
Probably not.

Motu caved in only after users screamed bloody murder at them, and this during the disaster that was DP4 which simply should never have been released in the state it was.

Everything you mention is true to some extent or another, eventually, things aren't supported anymore; try and get parts for an old car and see how far you get.

I agree that with software/hardware companies, this sort of thing happens quickly, but Digi's certainly not unique in this regard, just take a look back at all the synth, software, and hardware companies that have bitten the dust, (Paris, Opcode, Ensoniq, Voyetra, master Tracks pro, and the list could go on and on) at least Digi soldiers on, perhaps they know what they're doing, ya think?

But Digi won't cave in because they are in a monopoly type situation. So whenever they feel it's time for a new influx of cash, they just exclude older hardware from being recognized by new software updates.
Not because it CAN'T use it, but because they've decided to not use it.

And Digi seems to be one of the worst companies for this type of thing.
Becasue they control the hard and software side of their product. They really don't give a rats ass wether your Digi002 won't be compatible with current sofwtare. Becasue they can simply force you to buy their new Digi003. That doesn't really do anyhtign new. It just looks prettier.

definitely know what they're doing but in this day and age, fostering some 'good vibes' with their now captive clientele can't hurt anything. if people get burned too often, it's only logical (no pun) they'll start looking for an alternative.

You could substitute the word Apple for Digi in the above rant and you'd be on the mark as well.

Feel the love? It's not the 60's anymore.
And I'm so upset that I can't be your friend and play with you guys.
Try and see if you can get a couple more smily/icons in there to try and get your point across.

That's why I quit the Digidesign game after 10 years of pain altogether.

I'm in a position where I don't have clients telling me what DAW to use.

I feel a lot better and everything seems to work much more reliable these days. No stress because things stopped to work or were no longer supported.
