Unhappy Bad news re Richard Dodd guest forum & the GS Archives

Despite my trying to persuade him to do otherwise Richard Dodd decided to delete EVERY post of his in the guest moderator archives.

This is contrary to the understanding between him and I that all threads from guest forums were to be preserved in the sites archives.

He has done a comprehensive job, I belive his post deletion has been 'total'. Minus his posts, the archived threads are totally redundant.

It is my hope that future guest moderators understand the educational value of the archive fully. On behalf of everyone I will make a better effort to get this accross to potential guest moderators in the future.

He was planning to take the Q&A and collect them for a book. Might be he thought it would be better for the project to delete the source.

Jules, do you know the reason? Why should he answer all our questions and then delete them afterwards. Doesn't he know that I printed all his threads and answers on paper?

Richard went very personal on his replys. I was amazed at some of the things he talked about, I think he has all the right to remove those posts. And well, this is the internet and some people can really screw you if they want to. So I undertand him, I hope he comes back to moderate later on. It was really fun.

Question

Richard asked me to post this:

Dear all, I have, as knee jerk reaction (perhaps, just jerk), withdrawn my comments and replies to the period I was a Guest moderator.

In error, I adopted a style of 'one-on-one' more appropriate to a
classroom than, as I have discovered, the internet. This 'style' it
would seem has an unanticipated negative, the effect of which is to sour the experience for me.

I stand behind everything I wrote (intended to convey).
I have unfortunately received emails, and calls making comments etc. that are based on misquotes, bad reading and other ulterior motives.

My desire to delete is against the advice of Jules, who did inform me early on that my comments would be stored, for others to read later. Jules believes that a Gentleman's agreement to this affect existed between us, I apologise to Jules.

For MY peace of mind, I request that the period remain a pleasant memory. At some stage in the future I will create a FAQ section on my website, and I'll try to 'cover' the issues that seemed to be of greatest interest to others, omitting (if I can control myself) anything personal, controversial or negative.

Thank you for the great source of information that provide to all comers.Yours is a wonderful site, and I wish you all well.

Regards, Richard Dodd

Looks understandable.

One doesn´t know who reads what and what he might take from it. As it appears like Richard experienced a disdavantage to any certain case and decided from there to delete his posts, that is alright as I´m sure everybody agrees.

Now we can´t go back and recall his tips and all, but his contributions remain just as appreciated as they have been.

I have deleted posts of mine that I didn´t agree with after a second read and assumably many have done so. Sometimes I wish I could delete things I said.

It has been enriching to read from Richard´s great experience and it has been fun to hear a bit about the Tomm Petty works in my shelf for example. thumbsup

Deletions

There will be no 'book'.
During one thread I was advised "to write a book".
In 'jest' I replied that I would need a 'ghost writer', (I actually received offers can you believe?).
I have NO PLANS to write a book.
I do have enough "Sex'n''Drugs'n'Rock'n'Roll"
TRUE stories to fill one, but what good would that do? In reality, 'writers' only 'go after the dead ones' so as to avoid legal costs.
A purely 'technical' version with a few harmless anecdotes thrown in would even bore my Mother, and she thinks a 'magazine' article is impressive.
We, I believe, sign an invisible contract with everyone we work with. What happens during a project that is perhaps 'morally' questionable, is not 'published' by us.
I am aware that 'copies' of my posts exist.
That's great! I said some useful and some funny things. I was 'talking' and not writing, that is the mistake 'I' made. After the 'high' of everyone telling me 'how great I am' I ventured into the deep water of everyday forum. Whoa, there are some sharp teeth in the wrong mouths out there!
My best to you all.
Richard

The Internet is a strange place indeed... people think they know you on the basis of hastily typed volleys on forums like these. Stick around, I promise you the bared shark's teeth are just rubber movie props! (Most of the time...)

WTF?..... Shame on those who've brought Mr. Dodd to the point of removing his posts. tutt

That being said... I can't help but feel the deletion of every single post (or close to) was a tad drastic to say the least. Forgive my insolence but a few "surgical" removals of "questioned" posts would have been a more reasonable measured action here. But.... that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

With Respect,

Tim, If I knew which of the posts were going to be
attacked or misquoted I would have been more selective. Having said that, I'm sure if I had taken (had) enough time I could have safely left 85%.
But again, which 85%?
I'm sorry that we have this situation, the consolation to me is the fact that all of the 'bad' stuff has ceased! In fact a complete turn around, the ONLY mail I've received that refers to GS is all 'normal' stuff. Richard

Richard's posts contained some of the most useful information I have ever read on the subject. I didn't archive enough of it though

Thanks Richard for sharing your knowledge and experience. I respect your decision to delete your stuff, it's obviously your call.

I hope you'll come back and hang with us again some time...

my total thanks to jules and richard dodd for making the moderation happen.
richard was a real pleasure to have here.

this is a very interesting thing that was said by mr dodd , he feels that he may have made the mistake of talking instead of writing. this says something for staying anonimous , in that it does somehow give you a buffer in which to convey thougths without the added burden of being politically correct - or with worry about financial repercusions. which allows for more truth to be told.
i think although i relish great writing , it has been when people talk that a far deeper connection happens. hhmmmmmm......

also , do we all feel that what we do with our clients in the studio is private , and that we actually do sign an invisible contract ? ive always embrased a studio protocol of privacy , partly because it could affect others lives , and it could also affect my life. so what can we say here??

and alot of BS to. even though I congratulate Jules job of mainting this forum very smooth. I think using a real name and contact info would create a more intimate enviroment, where everyone starts "talking" more. by having anonymous people here, it creates a big dissadvantage for the guest moderators. and it's not surprising Richard's honesty backfired on him. I'm sure Fletcher lost some customers to because when he is pissed he doesn't give a good impression, and we all know who he is. But on the other hand , people like his honesty and decide to do business with him for that reason. Even though Richard gave alot of technical information, that information will probably only give us a 5% improvement over our own recordings. the personal level "talk" is where the real help is at. after all he is in a professional position 99% of this forum wishes were at, and he did not get there because he knows how to use a compressor better than others. and certainly we wont get there because we now know his compressor of choice and settings. It's the "personal talk" guidance of people like Richard where the real help is at. I don't understand why people don't see that, instead ruin it for the rest of us that need that kind of inpspiration to survive this shity business.

Oh well, F*** it.

Richard gave freely and he has the right to take away just freely.

So it's not there anymore.

Hopefully some you (I know I did...) took some of those little nuggets of wisdom, carried them around with you and let them become part of your life.

If not, what's the point?

Nothing worse than a drawer full of photgraphs you never look at.

I'm sorry for those of you that will really miss not being able to go back and read his posts but I think it's more important to respect Richard's peace of mind and let him purge whatever/whoever was causing him grief.

And who knows, maybe next time you ('you' being me and everyone else that reads these posts) will actually take a little time and think about what's being said instead of 'changing the channel' to the next post.

Now of I could only get my hands on a VINTAGE 1176

Cheers Richard and don't sweat it.

I just hope the wife doesn't slap you up-side the head for being so reactionary.

I got the distinct impression she was standing over you and answering just as many of the questions as you... "What do you mean you deleted all of OUR posts!?".

Take it easy.

R.

Well I have the whole shebang archived, PM me to buy the posts for $10 each.

BAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahah.... gasp. wheeze.

I wish I did.

I wouldn't sell them, I'd bind them and put them by the console.

Sucks to see this stuff happening, I always read the GS archives from time to time. I guess it's inevitable that weasels will attack from the wings.

Props to Jules for negotiating some great moderators and keeping this board one of the best on the net.

i don't get it, what happened? Why not just ignore some who were being jerks instead of ruining it for everyone? Since I don't know what happened it sure seems like a kid who's taking his toys and going home.

what does "misquoted" mean, Ive never heard it used like that before, is it similar to "nit picking" or does it mean being attatcked by lots of little things?

While it's not my place to speak for Richard, I belive I can assure everyone that the reason's for the deletions were not related to posting behavior during the forums Jan-Feb period.

I willl be sure to point out to future guest moderators that folks here often chose to 'save up' threads to read later, perhaps when they have free time and that this is one of the ways the archives are used.

For example, ... the "how to make money" forum has a LOT of info on it that I look forward to reading one day in the future....even though I help run the site, I dont have time to read everything right away.

Positive lessons learned all round I am sure...

Yea... thats a friendly and appreciative attitude... closer to ingrate.

You (and others) are the exact reason for my sardonic sig line, and my own deletion of my posts.
You speak of his actions seeming like a kid?
Your comment seems like an assumptive spoiled brat.
You did, after all, admit that you don't know what went on.

I soft peddled my first comment to you.

I see you're still not reading posts.

How about telling us what went on!!!!??? That's the point. In a thread regarding hundreds of posts being deleted, an explanation might clear things up and not leave people wondering what the heck happened. My comment may in fact stand if he deleted hundreds of posts simply because a few people pissed him off either in threads or in emails. I'm sorry but that's childish.

btw, don't do me any favors.
