Great to hear from you, Richard!

I am way surprised you spent as much time as you did and let as much of yourself out.

This IS the internet, you have NO idea who is talking, and who is listening. Kudos for having the guts, and thank you for that. I'd cut em' off, too.

I feel fortunate for having been here for it.

I saw Christo's work of art in 1991 before it was shut down after only three weeks when a freak accident crushed a woman.

I drove for miles and miles through this thing. Totally amazing. The memory lives on!

Has been said similarly by an intelligent person ones.

Christo is a completely vain and untalented individual, trying to peak the taunt on art.
Projects like these, spending millions of dollars on completely senseless and unproductive stuff is exactly what we need in times when nature, people and creatures are being distroyed for a couple of cents.

When he did his ridiculous Reichstag covering my cousin had 5 or so rondells far away from the Reichstag where there was some really skillful art exposed in.

Keeping in mind that my cousin is no free rider and doing art in Berlin for longer than anyone ever heard of any Christo and that his stuff was something completely different, with impressive faculty, effect and sense relating to the cities past and future.

Grand Maestro Christo however got pierced in the ass from all this productivity ( that had even been installed quite before his if I recall correctly ) and insisted to the officials on all the rotundes to be removed. He knew that his reputation would bend the city adminsitration and it did.

Later, when I heard of it I groused with my cousin, why he hadnīt called the press. He would had come to international focus and PR and now be better known than Christo.

But some arenīt good at PR, my cousin certainly ainīt.
Unfortunately. You should see what he is capable of.

Ruphus,

I knew little of Christo when I heard about the umbrella project and the thoughts I had were similar to what you have said. It just happened that I had to go to San Fransisco at the time, and I was in LA, so I thought what the heck, I'll check it out.

Well, nearly 15 years later, this is one of a very few visual pictures that has stuck in my mind. It was simply awesome, and on a very grand scale.

But one could not put such a thing into words, you simply "had to be there". Which kind of goes back to my original point.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have to agree. I also experienced the umbrella thing in Ventura County one weekend and it was quite impressive. Pictures do not capture it.
BTW those umbrellas were HUGE! As large as a party tent. They were built substantially.
I wanted to 'aquire' one after it was all over and shade my house for the blazing summers during the Santa Annas.

My Parents went to NY to see the Christo installation, they said it was beautiful. I think that art like that can't really be appreciated looking at pictures of it, what the artist is trying to create isn't so much an object as an experience in the head of the "viewer". You really don't get the experience unless you're there. Think of Maya Lin's Vietnam Vet memorial- to describe it, or see a picture, it doesn't seem like there's much there- a wall of black granite, with the names of the dead inscribed on it, below ground level. But, to go there and walk down that walk and gradually sink into this sea of names of people who died in a stupid war, and then gradually emerge again, is a most profound and humbling experience.

Wow, loved your posts Richard, sooooooooooo sorry to see them deleted!!!!

2 points come to mind though:

1) The best antidote against misquoting is access to the original text.

2) It's sad that by withdrawing your comments you've inadvertently let the "bad guys" win, and the rest of us, who so much appreciated your contributions, have lost.

Oh well, this is unfortunately becoming life as usual on the internet.

Nevetheless, thanks again Richard. I'm sure your fans/friends here far outnumber your detractors.

What a drag! This is tragic.

I knew I should have pasted more of the threads into microsoftword.

I have a hunch I know who may have taken offense.

It was I who started the tea thread and your replies were entertaining and productive. I appreciate your input and have moved tea firmly into to my arsenal of beverages. Your advice was priceless and I've got the process and the gear (bone china, strainer, etc) in-line and up and running. As a result, I've added a pleasant ritual to my routine and am less inebriated most of the time.

Thanks again for sharing. Regarding the reaction to your posts and to the offensive posters themselves...

I didn't read all the posts in Richard's forum, but I remember thinking that everyone seemed polite- and happy to have Richard here. I see Jules thinks the forum postings were not where the bad stuff went down, glad to read that. I am sure Richard had good reasons for pulling his posts, though I am disappointed that is the case.
To those who caused this mess: I am not being presumptuous in saying that YOU NEED TO WORK ON YOUR PEOPLE SKILLS. If you want to work in a creative area with other creative people, you have to be able to communicate without causing bull-shit. If you are able to send a kind and genuine person like Richard around the bend, well... back to the drawing board. I don't need to know the specifics of what went on to state any of this- the evidence is all in this thread. And hey, if you want to tell your side of it feel free. I am all ears.
Thanks for your time Richard, and all the best.
David

Wow ... what a sad thing.

To have Richard begin so open and so conversational, so full of loving intentions, then to have him turn jaded and cynical and giving the finger and deleting everything in fear and/or anger. I have no idea what set him off, but from the last moderator who left upset I can sincerely guess that it was not any one person, but the combined effect of the microscope that sharing yourself to a crowd of intelligent and deranged individuals shines on the soul. Over time it wears on you, then something will set you off. A few posts at the end of a moderators tenure, when they are already tired .. obviously this can put rational people over the top.

Then again he said "phone calls", so maybe it was the famous and the exposed that were upset with his anecdotal openness and as a professional decision he pulled it to protect their interests?

Yet to blame any one individual for Richard leaving would be wrong. It's hard to be yourself fully, to give fully and to get partial love and partial criticism (or worse, pure hatred) in return. This is the challenge of every artist who creates music, and it can be too much, we've all been there.

I hope Richard's spirit of plenty and courage and of giving returns to him ...thanks for everything Richard, you were amazing for a time!

Once again, sadly, the safe way to play it, is the safe way to play it.

Just another note for Richard to say thanks for all the advice.

Now the info isn't stored aint such a biggie - if you caught the wave and enjoyed then great - I'm sure coastguard Jules will spot another one soon. If I was Richard and I got any extra 'noise' as a result of my candour and philanthropy I'd bin the whole lot too.

Richards posts solidified my view that this is the best forum on the web period. I've been sorely addicted to this place since. Sometimes it comes in waves - sometimes it's cross referened and indexed.

Viva la gearslutz...

You know, I was pretty bummed out when he erased everything too. But in revisiting all of this, I went to RichardDodd.com. Man, he looks pretty tired to me. I'm kind of suprised he talked to us in the first place.
