Not to pour salt on your wounds there, brother, but they did that to my account awhile back and it took THREE MONTHS to straighten out. It's ludicrous. I forget what I had to do exactly but it was a multistep process that included them putting some sort of code in a 2 cent charge on my account, me getting my bank statement, and verifying the code. That was one step that took about 2 weeks; there were several more

Paypal is so convenient but some of their policies are scary. If there are any issues between buyer and seller they're sometimes resolved in unfair ways, in my opinion thus it's best to avoid them whenever possible, especially for big ticket purchses. On the other hand it does afford some protection in some other cases, so there's two sides to consider each time.

That sucks, but don't feel too bad about it:

A couple years ago, I got completely robbed of everything I had at the time through a PayPal/eBay scam. Well, it wasn't even a scam. Someone just plain hacked my account and sent themselves about $2,200, thus leaving me broke (as I wasn't broke enough already).

If PayPal had had the foresight for me, that they do for you, it would have saved me 4 days of nervous emails and bank watching. I did get the money back, because I caught it so quickly, but still...

I still don't even know how my account got compromised. I'm no moron, and I don't click on weird links, give out my personal information or anything like that.

Anyway, just a little perspective for you. In the end, you'll have a Prophet 5 and you'll think it was totally worth the trouble.

for large purchases use other services!
escrow for instance.

inside the EU, a banktransfer is much much better.

I really dislike paypal as well.

I bid on and won a Notator Unitor 2 in germany. After having a friend translate my text into german to communicate with the seller, I found out that he didn't want to sell to me because I wasn't in Germany. I had an address within Germany for him to ship too, and was ready to wire him more then enough money.

so he cancelled the sale some how. I got charged with fees from ebay and paypal. I had to shutdown an account at the bank to make sure that they would not steal my money and charge me unfair fees. I also had to call paypal and ebay and got the run around with paypal telling me it was an ebay problem and vice versa, but they are the same company....

Escrow isn't really viable much of the time, because if it's an in-demand item most sellers won't want to bother given the extra time and unpredictability with it. Worth trying but most of the time it won't fly.

Best to rely on a combo of factors including feedback, time on ebay, willingness to accept partial payment at least via COD, etc.

Hey Cosmos,
Sorry to hear about your troubles.

There is a forum on eBay dedicated to discussing Paypal and you will see that alot of people, both buyers and sellers, are falling victim to this Paypal scam. They can do this to anybody, anytime and it is completely legal!

Paypal will be earning interest off of your money while they 'hold' it and do their 'investigation'. Once you add up the interest from the thousands of people that they are now doing this to, you will see that they have come up with quite a money making scheme.

My only suggestion is to post your situation on the forums and see if somebody who has been through the same thing can give you some advice.

Good luck!

no you wire money and it gets transferred. that is it.

i've wired money to the UK b4. if you have to wire money tell your banker to make sure that there are no intermediaries banks handling the wire cause the intermediary bank will charge a fee from the wire amount.

I just had a beef with Paypal over them continually sending me 'reminder' emails to return my account to 'regular standing'. (stupid long winded 'get code' scenario etc). They said I was at or near my acoount income limit of about £1,750. It was actually only at £650.

I got so sick of their innacurate emails I berated the poor Paypal customer service clerk telling him " I hate Paypal so much I REALLY REALLY HATE IT!- I HOPE THEY GO BUST or GET BLOWN AWAY BY NEW COMPETITION"

He was a bit stunned at the intensity of emotion in my voice - although I re-assured him that I was 'ranting' not at him, but at the ethics, greed and complexity of a company that has a logo which says it is 'smart' and 'simple' to use.

I have all but stopped using the service now except for small transactions.

I received 'concerned' emails after that, about what I thought of their service, and if I had used it recently or intended to reccommend it to anyone.

I really enjoyed letting them know my thoughts...

I have never used this emoticon before:

dfegad Paypal.

Okay,

I may be flamed here, but...oh well! To everybody who has suffered at the hands of paypal, I am sorry to hear of your misfortunes. Maybe it's because I make them a lot of money with my transactions and such that they are so eager and quick to resolve my issues promptly?

I sent a fellow 270 dollars yesterday. He said he would not take paypal after I had already paid. It was a part of his ebay checkout process. He did not deselect the paypal button. The money was in his account. He said I would have to contact Paypal to resolve that issue. I was pretty pissed. Well, I called their CS line. Within 25 minutes, I had my 270 back. They called the seller, and confirmed the issue and he concurred it. So the money came back and I'm mailing him a money order and he's going to be more careful.

I sold a Prophet 5 3.3 with the most accessories I've ever seen one sold with on ebay for 2700 dollars to a guy in Italy. I included a full set of spare keys, walnut wax, and a bunch of other stuff, flight case, etcetera. I did not want to part with it, but...new avenues are coming. Anyways, I avoided Paypal because of all this fear with large ticket items. I, however, have been using them since they first came around. I have been using ebay since 1999. The only problems I ever have are those with those damn buyers who stick a 2 1/2" thick keyboard in a 50x20x10 box with a garbage bag packed with tissue paper on one end, and a piece of cardboard on the other, with all that room to wiggle around. Yes, I am bitching about a recently received keyboard that arrived in far less than the mint state it was purchased in. I've received numerous refunds legitimately due to sellers being idiots and not properly packaging their gear. I am an avid seller, in fact, I make a living on ebay selling. It's not a lot of money, but my life also doesn't require much money to survive and I support two of us, my son and myself. While these sellers throw their fits, I'm always completely honest and never once have lied.

Recently, I received a "New" bass station keyboard, yeah right. It arrived in the original box, and when it got here, I looked up the seller's previous items because the keyboard did not function. 3 dead keys and would not output sound. 3 dead keys came from using it as a midi controller with a 106. I documented the last item and even contacted the previous buyer. The seller was full of shit, period. Paypal saw this and absolutely refunded my money. I have never lost a penny, but with this new keyboard, I am sick and tired of fools ripping me off and I hope one day that the power of the universe returns them the favor. They are deserving of such bad energy. So in my experience, Paypal has been nothing but a good thing for me and I will continue to use them. Remember, they are not a bank, they are not FDIC insured, they....act kind of like some random stranger on the street you trust with holding your money. You say hey stranger, here, hold onto this 5000 dollars while I continue on with my life, but when I need it, I want you to give it to me....and this is frightening, yes.

I suppose until I experience the negative side [after all these years, I have yet to!] I'll continue to use them and only convey my condolences to those who have had experiences beyond nightmarish.

Best of luck of resolving the issue. Hope you get that p5 you bought sooner than later and that Paypal does work with you to correct this silly issue. I am sure if people brought a class action lawsuit against ebay, we could get google checkout to be accepted automatically. I mean, come on, if they can do it to Microsoft, they can definitely do it to eBay...I would rather use the evil doers checkout system than paypal but...that's a whole other story [dividing funds up with companies ensure a healthier economic system].

:-)

We have always had pretty good luck with them. When an issue does arrive we usually call them and let them know we use the service for our business and they take care of the issue while I am on the phone. I once used my PALPAL debit card to make a purchase at cartier for my wife. I did not realize that I only had a 3000$ limit on the card and needed about double. Within 5 minutes of my call to them they resolved the issue. Regardless of how stupid the 1st support person is just get to the highest supervisor ASAP and let them know you are using their service and THEY have put you in a bind. Be polite, patient and persistent. The 3 "P's" always work as long as you get to the highest person in the building.

Sorry to hear about your issues. Don't you hate to deal with those "thats our policy" people?

Other reasons to despise PayPal/eBay:

1. They now force you to offer PayPal as a payment type if you want a sellers account on eBay. In the past, it wasn't required to offer PayPal, it was strongly suggested based on buyer statistics. Additionally, if you choose to state in your auction that you will not accept PayPal despite it appearing as a payment option for buyers, they'll flag your ad and pull it down for violation of their policies agreement.

2. Apparently PayPal now randomly puts holds on your payments, and then tells you they will not release the funds to you until you provide tracking information showing the items been received, or the buyer has left you positive feedback! I recently sold an item (value: $130.00) and got this response from PayPal:

"
You've received a payment, detailed below. We’ve placed a temporary hold on the funds for this transaction.
PayPal and eBay are working together to make payments for eBay items even safer. Because we want both buyers and sellers to feel confident about sending and receiving payments through PayPal, we may temporarily hold payments for items sold on eBay.
Make sure to ship the item right away, so you'll have access to the funds sooner. We’ll release the hold in 21 days unless you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the hold. We may release the hold earlier if either of the following occurs:
  • The buyer leaves you positive feedback on eBay.
  • We confirm that the item was delivered.* We can confirm delivery if you ship the item with USPS, FedEx, or UPS and either use PayPal shipping labels or upload tracking information from the transaction details page. This applies to transactions within the United States.
Additional hold period
If you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the hold, we may hold the payment until the problem is resolved.
Learn more about the PayPal policy for payment holds for eBay items.
We will notify you by email when the funds are released. You can monitor the status of the hold in your Transaction History.
* This applies to US domestic transactions that are shipped by USPS, FedEx, or UPS and either (i) use PayPal shipping labels to ship items or (ii) provide tracking information to PayPal."

I don't think I even need to explain how biased and dangerous this new policy is. I hope this is a random one time thing and not something they start doing every 'x' amount of transactions. Unbelievable. Mind you I'm a premier verified member with 100% positive feedback on eBay.

So sorry to hear that you went through this with PayPal.

It happens with everyone at some point with them.

In my new product, to help sellers that may not want to use paypal, we added Amazon Payments.. a 100% straight up easy experience with micropayments and all built in.

Interesting...

I've done hundreds of transactions through paypal (echecks are the best value...takes a few days to clear like a check but only costs $5 for the entire transaction...) and haven't had a single issue with them yet.

In fact, I won an auction on eBay a while back for a Dell monitor. The bonehead seller kept stringing me along telling me he'd shipped it, etc... 28 days later - still nothing. I filed a complaint with Paypal and within 5 days they credited my account back the money I'd sent him for that auction.

So, despite the fact that I hate paying their fees - it's been a pretty painless experience for me. I really dig their new paypal plug-in for IE that lets you create single and multi-use instant credit card numbers for online transactions as well. I've always hated entering my CC info into some of the oddball sites that sell some of the obscure crap that I can't find anywhere else.

Knock on wood of course, but I don't think they are all that bad.

I had the same thing yesterday!!

The email said; "As you have received £650 you are nearing your £1700 limit"

Keh? What ****in school did you go to?

The part which gets me is that my account is on hold. During this time I cannot withdraw any of my funds from my account but I can receive funds into it. After all it would be awful if Paypal weren't able to earn interest from our money because of one of their stupid policies.

I also received an email from them after I complained asking what my thoughts were. I started to feel like they actually gave a shit, until I got the exact same email from someone else at paypal, just a stock letter they send to anyone who expresses dissatisfaction at their ridiculous policies.

I also have some funds on hold until I either receive positive feedback or the buyer doesn't put in a claim for 21 days. ****s.

I ****IN HATE THESE ****S!!!!
