God Damn Shipping is expensive these days....

I haven't shipped anything for a while do to being swamped with work but I had to send out my monitor controller to be repaired today. Standard ground, UPS boxed it up and they now charge $1.75 per $100 insurance up from the $1.00 per $100 last year. From L.A. to Colorado........ $112!! 22lbs. at the UPS Store. Just thought I'd bitch about something today...

remember how, like 5 years ago, we used to laugh at Canadians and Europeans because goods and services were so expensive for them and cheap for us?

yeah, well they're laughing now...

It's a mistake to ship with the UPS store unless you're prepared to be ripped off. The UPS store is an independent 3rd party establishment that adds their own rates on top of UPS stated rate (which you can find out on their website).

1) First problem - Having the UPS store pack it up (which I'm pretty sure they charge too much for).

2) Using their insurance instead of getting your own UPS account (which is free) and making a label on their UPS.com online system and printing it and taping it to the box.

3) They also generally charge about double for the shipping itself, not including the overpriced insurance.

Your box would have cost about $45 (give or take a couple dollars) to ship with full insurance if you had done the online (with your account), then print label method. About 60% less.

yeah, I guess I paid the "convenience" fee but still, pretty damn expensive, if I had the time and boxes laying around I woulda saved some cash. It is just really expensive. I am over it now.

I've had the same expensive experience at the UPS store - including have a package shipped back to me directly because a clerk entered the return address as the shipping address. I've always found that FedEx ground has much lower rates; too, the USPS now charges Priority mail per distance/zone. They used to have a flat-rate, which was a pain if you were shipping just down the road, but now, of course it's the opposite - local shipping is pretty cheap.

Great tips! I used to work in a mailing center so I've learned a few ways to save, but I didn't know we could make our own labels on ups.com. Considering how much it costs to drive from California to Colorado, I really think $120 is quite a bargain. UPS workers need to get paid for their time too. Just driving to the Studio in S.B. or going to L.A. has been tough for me with our current gas prices.

Why did Barak Obama leave Hawaii? To get to the voters on the mainland.
