aaaaaaaaAAAAARRRRRRRRGH!!!!!

we had a major mishap in the studio yesterday evening - the lights went out and came back immediately with a brownout and a bunch of gear went south. we have everything regulated, and from there, to a couple of hefty UPS units. i can't understand what failed but i've had this place about 20 years and this has never happened.

our tech and electrician arrive tomorrow morning to assess the damage. we've always been aware of mexico's substandard electrical power, and i thought we were well covered, so this is a very unpleasant surprise.

was tracking a band we're producing for Sony/BMG so there was alot of stuff on... 4 Pultecs, LA2, 2 X Neve 1081, 4 X Neve 1272s, 2 X Summit EQs, Chandler Zener, Fatso, Inward Connections TSL3, 8 X API 312s, Avalon M22s, 2 XShadowhills Gamas, AKG C24, 2 X neumann KM 53, 2 X 582s, ribbons, dynamics, Barefoots + S3As, etc.... i'm sure you get the picture. the fuses were shot on most of the gear, so God willing we can resolve the majority of this with fuses but i don't even want to try turning anything on til the techs arrive, and even less want to think about the worst case scenario.

at any rate i know at least one of the Barefoots is ok. the other one didn't turn back on so i'm afraid that one and one S3A may have bitten the bullet. i'll know for certain tomorrow...

don't know what kind of karma i'm paying but wow...

anyway can't wait to get through a full session with the Barefoots... they sure sounded stellar the little time i got to enjoy them. :( .... man, i can't even give a rave review here, not that Thomas an Co. need it... wouldn't be fair as i haven't had the time to mix something and take it out of the room yet, but i can say i'm well acquainted with the room, and i could tell immediately i was hearing about as close a representation of what was going on as i ever had...

anyway sorry for the rant but man.... do i at least get moan of the year award?

I'm so sorry bro, the good news is that you have a really talented tech, so don't worry, in the end, it's only fuses, tubes, caps or PSU's, everything could be repaired. The "downside" is time and money, but nothing that a royalty's advance can't fix

Best regards.

some good news!

it seems the only thing that went on one MM27 was the power supply, and same with one S3A.

our tech is going downtown tomorrow to hunt for the exact parts for the PSUs. if he finds them he'll be working on the speakers on saturday.

...and all the other gear fired up and measured fine after installing new fuses, and a couple of resistor replacements on some of the PSUs!!!

the electrical guy is going through the installation with a fine toothed comb to make sure all is ok, so we may be able to get back to work as early as monday!

but i don't want to sound too cocky yet, we still have to go through all the mics and run audio through everything, but things could have been alot worse, thank God. thanks alot for your moral support guys. and thank you armando for offering a strong arm in case we couldn't get back up... friends like you aren't easy to find.

Great news Raal ! It was hard just to read your post so I can't imagine what you went through but I'm really happy to hear that your equipment is OK.

The best of lucks.

Glad to hear that the damage was minimal! But it seems like you ought to get in touch with the folks who provided the UPS and the folks who build the gear that has supposedly been doing the "regulating". I bet it has already occurred to you that this scenario is precisely what this stuff is supposed to protect you from. Regardless of what happened with the AC, that stuff should have at least shut down the power safely and protected your gear. Somebody's got some 'spainin to do.

I believe some of those UPS companies have a warranty/guarantee to cover equipment repairs/replacement if something goes awry and the UPS was at fault. Of course saying and doing are too separate things.
