apogee ensemble, tool or toy?

ive been doing a b tests with this and a motu896hd... ive swapped out my monitors for different ones so i havnt been able to pit them in that manner... maybe i just got a lemon but there is slight audible noise in the headphone jack and its far lacking in power where as the motu drives a pair of sen650hd with power to spair and is crystal...ill fill in with the monitor tests when i get them in...to me it just seems a little wierd that the ensemble and the rosetta200 are reletivly the same price maybe ones better and the fact that there pulling the same "not compatible with anything " crap that mac is ... im droping the mac os and sticking with windows...well ... untill mac takes over 30% more of the world then ill switch back...Welcome to zomby consumer nation

I'm not sure that its entirely appropriate for an audio forum

although one of the most well known members of this forum does have a picture of someone actually being murdered for his avatar..

another thread had someone else with this exact problem (noise on the headphones/mains or something like that). He was freaked out so he called apogee and they replaced it and now it apparantly works fine. Sounds like you've got a bad one

From other threads it seems the last batch or two of Ensembles are defective and have the same problem..............Macleodgrant has his own thread of it and it seems to be a quite common problem. I had the 896HD and also the Motu Traveler and normally soundwise they don't even belong in the same room with the Apogee stuff.

Both the Duet and the Ensemble normally have absolutely pristine headphone outs as well (I use Sennheiser HD 595's, but I've also used 600's, 515's and 650's)

As far as Mac OSX goes, I think it's rapidly catching up with Windows Vista in stability problems; Leopard been sucking for a lot of people. Your particular problem has nothing to do with OSX though.

OSX has some advantages over Windows such as the lack of viruses. You can also run Windows on your Mac a lot more stable than on a Windows computer because Apple engineers are doing drivers for only 40-50 pieces of hardware max; all Macs have the same hardware while PC's have hundreds of thousands of different things to code for.

Just to confirm what others here are saying, the first Ensemble unit I was shipped had a constant high-pitched whine in one of the two headphone outputs. I contacted Apogee, they replaced it, and the second unit has caused me no problems. You definitely need to exchange your unit.

As for Leopard, I have had no problems with it (I've been using it since January). I've historically had far more problems using PCs than I've ever had using a Mac. (BSOD) I have not used Vista and have no curiosity to try it...

ultra mega chicken

sounds about right...nazi company decides to save a million and ship cheap units and make up for it to the high class customers (the patient ones) with an exchange for the real thing while the other 50% circulate and eventually end up in someone's closet... well i guess ill send it back and hope for the best... as for what is going on in my avatar.... copy and paste the link

it only took 9 posts to invoke Godwin's Law; better toss out my PSX-100 since it now appears Apogee is gassing Jews...

There are other posts already about this... Apogee provided unusually high amounts of gain for the phones outputs, there is usually no problem with the unit, there is a problem with gain structure.

Open Maestro and check your gain structure.
