That news story says that Monster Cable sued a lot of people, but interestingly enough does not say whether they won any of those suits.

my understanding of the bullying is that none of the suits have ever been tried. If a case gets close to going to trial, Monster will pay the would-be defendant to agree to settle out of court.

if you missed it, here's some fun'n'games with monster:

I'll add to the monster bashing (uh-oh, I said "monster" in a thread, they may sue me). I bought one of their garbage cables several years ago and it broke within a month. For that alone I would never buy another one, and seeing their wonderful reputation certainly seals the deal.

Regardless of the horrible business practice, no one should pay $50 for a $15 cable.

Probably right after they retroactively sue the promoters of the '80s Monsters of Rock festival...

Yeah. So he says they don't do any of the stuff people are accusing them of doing, and it's all because people are just misinterpreting the Patents & Trademarks database.

Notice how he makes no attempt to explain the first-party reports coming directly from people who describe being dragged into expensive legal hassles over these ridiculously far-fetched claims of 'infringement'. I wonder why that is.

I hate this kind of corporate bullying and I'd imagine most of the pro audio endorsees of Monster Cable would too if they were aware of it. Here's a list of artists, studios, engineers and producers that Monster cable says endorse their products. I'd imagine that in the small world of Gearslutz a lot of members have direct contact with these endorsees. Maybe they could point them to this thread and see if they still want to be a "famous monster"

Hmmm...should I use audio cable or a salt block to wire my system?

I just found this and thought it was amusing. Imagine being worried that people might be so confused that they'd buy a big block of salt and try to use it to connect their vintage U67 to an API 3124+ ...incredible!

The link.
Attorneys for Winthrop & Weinstine recently convinced Monster Cable that a product called "Monster Deer Block" would not cause confusion in the marketplace with its cable products.
There is a considerable difference, Winthrop attorneys argued, between a flavored salt and mineral lick designed to attract wild deer and Monster Cable's electric cable and connectors for wiring household electronics. California-based Monster Cable withdrew its trademark challenge after the Minneapolis attorneys filed a dismissal motion on behalf of Denco, an ethanol producer in Morris, Minn., that has been selling Monster Deer Block since 2005.

In terms of form or functionality? Because I can see the difference in form, but they're both fairly useless for pro-audio...
