I think I am going to be sick and possibly cry.

so I was moving some stuff around where I have my studio set up. And I wasn't paying attention, and I knocked one of my monitors off the cart it was on! .. it made me feel so sick to my stomache when it made that thud sound hitting the ground. .. I could hear the wood crack. There's a big crack down one side of it, and a small one on the back. And the woofer isn't working at all. The tweeter still is. It fell a good 4 feet. .. I just wanna go crawl in a hole, and the worst part is I can't even get mad at anyone cause the only person to blame is myself cause I wasn't paying attention. I am going to try to pry it open and see what the extent of the damage is and see what might be able to be done to repair it to some extent. they're only BX8a's so they're not the best or most expensive .. but I mean it's all I have .. and the thought of any kind of gear (except maybe behringer) being damaged is painful.

sorry, dude.

that sucks.

but, look on the bright side...

you can always look at this as the perfect opportunity to go into debt for

a brand new RIDICULOUS pair of monitors - that you wouldn't have bought before -

( maybe even buy / build a pair of THESE )

NOW YOU HAVE THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO GO FOR IT..!!!!!

ps....if you wanna feel better, just watch dane cook or CR on youtube!

LOL .. I love Dane Cook. I have two of his full CD's on my Itunes library. It's always great when they shuffle through on those. I always die laughing at his stuff.

I would love to actually get some NS10's but I really can't afford them. I could barely afford the BX8a's when I got them. But for the price I thought they sounded really really good, and the low end response kept me from really having to have sub.

I am planning on getting some NS10's and a good sub to go with it in the future. I think maybe woofer may have come disonnected in the fall and that's why it's not working. I haven't taken it apart yet. But I think I may be able to do some repairs on it and hopefully the sound won't be too affected for me to still use it till I can afford to upgrade.

I actually really like the way they sound .. seems easier to work with them. I have a couple of friend who work at a big studio here in Memphis and they all have ns10's and I sit in on sessions from time to time and do some free assisting work to learn more and I've always liked working with them there. I Will probably do some more research and go try some other ones out though before I drop any money into it to be sure I get the ones I really want.

Sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. I've seen some monitors go down myself. One time, one of the stands which was holding a new 626 was knocked over, but the bad part was, it came crashing down on a new M-Audio keyboard (which now has a huge dent and bad octave). They were both less than a month old. Talk about cringing. I'm still feelin' that one. Anyway, we gotta roll with the punches! Don't get too discouraged, I hope things work out for you soon!

Best regards,

If you really want to be slutty, take this as an excuse to go to a 5.1 setup. After all, you've already got one good monitor to use as the center channel. See there, you're saving money already.

That sux. But it reminds me of when I used to do live sound. I had a huge Altec Lansing voice of the theatre cabinet fall out of a pickup truck. It rolled like a hundred feet down a hill and across someones lawn. Wood and fiberglass everywhere. Looked like a plane crash lol.

We picked up the pieces and managed to screw and glue it all back together...

If I could rebuild that giant folded horn 2 hours before a gig you can fix that reference monitor! The glue was still drying at the show. Have faith.

Yeah I took it apart, I know I can get a box for like 30 dollars .. but I think that the woofer might be bad .. either that or something got jarred on the circuit bored. I am going to go over it with a voltmeter and maybe take the other one apart and try the woofer out of that one on this one. I think I can rebuild it for less than 100 bucks or so. I am thinking about getting a pair of KRK ST6's while I work on this one and get it worked out just to have something decent to finish a couple of projects on. Plus I have been wanting another set to A/B my mixes on as I go.

that's horrible but funny! It's good to know you were industrious to put it back together though!

I sincerely hope it works out for you! I think you could manage fine with the KRKs. When I was without my main monitors for awhile, I found the change to be character building.

No way the woofer is bad after a 4 foot drop. My EV 15 survived a "Plane Crash" I'm sure it is just a wire. And was horrible and funny Sonic. I was laughing my ass off and panicking at the same time. I wasn't driving and kept telling him to slow down. LOL

I was more embarrassed about scrambling across someones lawn to get the pieces. It all exploded at the joints.

The funny thing is I don't remember most of my old girlfriends. But the cabinet tumbling down the hill is burned into my mind.

Hook the woofer straight to the amp jack and try it. I am sure it is fine.

Oh I see they are powered monitors. I still can't image more than a loose part somewhere.

Yeah I think it's something that got knocked loose on the impact. I tried hooking the lead from the amp circuit to another speaker and didn't get anything .. but I haven't had a chance to look at it this week. I am having to move locations right now. I'll break into again next week and hopefully figure something out. It appears that the replacement parts aren't much from Maudio so I just need to figure out what I need to order.

YAY

so I took my tax refund that I didn't think I was going to get and just got some new monitors. I compared my old ones to some Yamaha HS80M's and man .. I didn't realize how bad the M-Audio's sounded until I did a comparison. So I got the Yamaha's and I am so much better. I can hear so much detail it's not even funny.

I am going to take my working BX8a and gut it and turn it into a subkick mic. I'll post pics when I get it finished if you guys are interested.

So the monitors fell off for a reason - you deserved better and now you got it. Funnily enough last week my partner was engineering for me and he went around the back of a rack to check a plug and one of my V72's fell off and hit him in the cheek. It broke the power lamp on the pre, which is inside a big metal case. He looked like he'd been puched in the face and I couldn't stop laughing all session. The pre is fine, his face, well it will heal I guess....

I did exactly the same thing with an old set of BX5a's. I knocked one off a stand whilst reaching behind it.

I'm pretty sure most other monitors would have been killed falling from the same height, but it didn't help that the BX5a woofer magnet is attached with a pea size blob of what can only be likened to PVA children's glue.

MAudio build quality is atrocious!

Not all bad news though - I upgraded to P33-A's and I future proofed my speakers with a new policy regarding getting behind the desk - unplug everything, and move it somewhere else! Glad I didn't learn to do that more expensively.
