Bummer..
I have turned away 2 perfectly capable potential interns over the last few months - because both have religious issues with working on a Sunday.
(I have to add something here to my origional post - to make it clear - while interviewing them, their unavailability 7 days a week factored into my descision but - there was more to it than that. So my post is poorly phrased...)
We get a lot of our business over weekends (it's the only time many semi / pro bands that have day jobs are free to record) and here Interns / asssitants are expected to last "the whole session" - not skip days.
As Sunday is a popular day for family and friends with Mon - Fri jobs I feel it important for all staff members to have to potential to work Sundays...
It's ironic that I have a Christian band in today (Monday)
It doesn't make me happy. I feel I am discriminating...Which I am....

Well...
If it is of any comfort, both interns (and a slew of others that CAN work Sundays) failed the modern rock quiz I level at all aplicants, (name 5 new bands that didnt start releasing records 5 or 10 years ago)
Queeen - no!
Radiohead - no!
Chilly Peppers - no!
Oasis - no!
So that alone makes these people unsuitable for the position.
We are really struggling to find 20 year olds with ANY REASONABLE grip on the modern rock music scene.
Remember, these are kids that could be cleaning the studio one day and running a gtr overdub for me while I take a call the next... |

It's the availability restriction that throws up a flag, not the religious conviction.
The musical knowledge thing is a REAL problem! |

Jules you gotta stop looking in the Roman Catholic schools...
Surprised that you can't find someone suitable in that age group who'll work whenever - I got them queueing up here...

Well mozeltoff to you all!
And no back to the story..
The last kid at the end of the call said well is it allright if I give your number to someone else at my college who has a keener interest in rock? I said sure and couldnt help remarking that his suggestion was a "christian gesture" no pun intended...
So I got a call for a female audio school chum of his.
Watch this space... |

Or even Mazeltov Jules!
On a more serious note, they're lucky you're being so honest - far better in the long run.
I'm Jewish, and lucky/unlucky enough to work in investment banking (audio is a long-time hobby), and I don't work Saturdays.
I've been offered extremely well paying jobs recently which would have needed me to work on Saturday on occasion, now the Banks in question wouldn't/couldn't turn me down because of me not wanting to work on Saturday, and indeed they all offered me positions - but the higher the level of management I spoke to, the more this was clearly something which would be a problem - but they felt they couldn't say it (or maybe they just didn't like me!)
So I went to the place which was honest - and accomodating, and there's nothing wrong with you being honest too - better for everyone in the long-run, and if they're serious/mature they'll understand that too.
Anyway enough! - How's the HotBox?
Pete

Don't mean to offend anyone but religion in my opinion sometimes is one big hipocresy. There is no one I know, that follows every rule without braking one. I am very consersative and follow most traditions, I go to the synagogue every friday night and special holidays. But hey, I eat pork and drive on saturdays. Does that make me a bad jew ?? I consider myself a good person who is willing to help out anyone I can, regardless of their beliefs and I think that is what g-d realy wants. He could care less if you take the elevator on saturday but beat the shit out of your neighbor on sunday. So realy ? How important is sharing Sunday with your family, if you are not willing to even have a conversation during the week. One thinks that by going to church on sunday you have purified yourself and ready to be an ass during the week. In other words, Jules.. don't feel bad. I'm sure it's pure laziness. sorry for this post, but since this is the moan zone , I wanted to share some of my thoughts on reiligion and what people make of it |

Just stumbled across this thread and I noticed kids lately saying "I really want to intern. I can work Tuesdays and Thursdays and every other Saturday."
What the hell is that?
Like my friends say "Rock don't take no Holiday!"
Just ask MW.

What the hell is that? | i see your point, but look at this: i did two internships while in my senior year at mtsu's recording program. i had a 16 hr. classload, and spent ~30 hours a week between 4pm - 8am in the studios doing recording projects for classes. i also tried to attend the mtsu aes chapter meetings (i was treasurer), as well as student chapter of smpte (i was secretary). to top it all off, i worked all weekend to pay the bills. this led to me saying to the people i was interning for, "i'm really busy, but i'd love to learn from you on these days (insert days here). i'll have an occasional conflict, but i'll let you know well in advance. and you'll never catch me yawning."
i was honest and up-front about what i had going on, and neither had a problem with that.
here's the statement that will get some flames thrown my way: if you're pissed that someone will only be there to bring you your coffee 3 days a week, maybe you should re-evaluate why you want an intern.
however, jules did have a good point about consistency among who is in the control room. point taken.
