They didn't ask me to to re-mix it.
They were going to re-mix the entire show.
Thanks to ME they didn't have to spend the money at Criteria!

In the case of Kings X, I was paid $1800.00 to mix the show for broadcast.
I ran a reference DAT for every show.
My friend assisted, liked the band, made a clone of the DAT and then gave them a CD TWO YEARS AGO (I originally said he gave them the CD last summer.)

I have a bunch of other bands, too.
Mr. Big, Black Crows, etc...

I should release the mixes and see what happens!

You don't mean this I'm sure. The copyright on the recorded material wouldn't automatically belong to you just because you did the engineering, right?

KX mightn't even known who the mix engineer was.

Next time I guess you should stipulate a credit in you contract, at least in something like your Metallica gig.
Yeah, its a bummer but this stuff needs to be sorted out in advance.

If you think about it, credits with big bands are a big deal... If no band member or record co or management person has ever met you in person or can not remember who you are...... you start to join the ranks of either
'nut job weirdos who keep calling the office" or the trampled underfoot casualties of a successful act (who do good deeds but get little or no credit for it...)

Music biz velvet rope syndrome....

credits are things that you have always had to negotiate in advance. Always been that way

I still work with one of the bands and we did release the show I did for them.

The other bands are mostly history, but Metallica, Black Crows, etc... might get a bit upset. I could put it on the web. the return for the hassle wouldn't be worth the time.

No credit DOES matter because while I was doing these shows my name went out on each broadcast as the mix engineer. I was also on tour with a label band during this time and and as we went across the U.S. on tour I was always amazed at how many people came up and said they liked the ZROCK show mixes.
I used to be amazed at the number of people that would approach me to tell me that they had an obscure demo of a then famous band that I had recorded/mixed.
The lead singer would thank me from stage, so people knew who I was. They'd then come up to me and say, "Hey, I have that Rogor Mortis demo cassette you did way back when" or some other band that was fairly obscure.

This is how you get a reputation.

I don't do bands now, so I don't care.
I just thought it was amusing that here it happens again.

ain't it funny how the world works

you can buy a 120 dollar text book , the guy that supposedly wrote
the book makes the money off the information in the book
but all he did was copy the information
or my fav.
you can buy a fender bass pose in pictures make tons of money playing it
in theory if your making money playing that bass should fender get a cut
only I'm not sure that fender would be as greedy as some musicians lawyers

flipping houses pisses me off

ever asked a cop to see his registration and insurance ( they don't have it )
\why are most of the city employees illegal immigrants
so Dubbo welcome to the wonderfully world of greed

Yes 'cause he's totally gonna go release it onto *insert preferred bit torrent tracker of uncertain legal status* under the account nameDannyMuF*ckinBrown. Because he is craven, and stupid.

Funny guy you are!

If I was only paid to mix the show for broadcast, but also taped it with my own equipment onto my own media... the recording is mine if I copyrighted the recording.
I can copyright the mix as a sound recording.

I mixed a cd for a band, got national airplay, one song (remixed - but my stems were used) was used for a very long segment on Sex in the City. I was paid by the song, had no points. My credits were not included in the allmusic database...I have no claim.

I got the cash at the time and a story to tell, and that's all.

ZROCK was great. i miss it. dallas radio hasn't been worth turning on since then. i'll never forget the day i got in the car, turned on the radio to get my morning metal fix, and was hit in the face with blaring mariachi music. it was a sad day.

The wierd part was that although the ABC/Satelite Music Network offices and studios were in Dallas there wasn't a local ZROCK affiliate station.
About half of the ZROCK concerts were not even aired locally.
The band was in Dallas playing at a concert hall or arena, but it was people in other areas that got to hear the shows.

It was also our big joke in Lord Tracy that we were the band that killed what-ever the big local rock station was at the time. Lord Tracy took off and since the local boys had a hit song we got lot's of air play. We were in Florida on tour and someone called us and told us that the station was airing CHRISTMAS MUSIC!
Lord Tracy was the final straw I guess!
Oh well... it was good to have local radio support even if it is during the last days of that station's format!

Here's another way of thinking about it..

How much in monetary terms do you think a full and proper credit would have enhanced your wallet?

Check out some old records. Rolling Stones, Motown, ...

Very little or no credits. Musicians, engineers, studios, ...
Yeah, dude. What that guy said. Who do you think you are, Geoff Emerick or something?
