Thumbs down Velvet Revolver.... Yuk, i'm taking it back to the shop

Any thoughts/stories, pro guys?

I cannot say how disappointed I am, being a fan of all involved...

Uninspiring drivel, with digital crackle on almost every track as a special bonus! ... Or is it percussion?

The drums are mixed so quietly on the "loud" stuff, and nothing breathes... Was this recorded/mixed/mastered in High End studios?

Hey, I'm no high end dood, but I was bummed about my ITB demo mixes til today! Now I'll play them to anyone

Slash does do some awsome solos, of course!

Peace,

Blast9

Very STP.

Track 11 (I think that's the one) sounds very much like "Heaven & Hot Rods" off No. 4.

Sounds emotionless to me. I definately agree that it doesnt feel like it breathes. I feel like Im in a trapped box when I listen to it. Sounds very contrived and lifeless.

I just drove three hours from CT to NH...and listened to it a few times.

Basically its the 6th STP album

I liked the production...but I also liked the Cult's last album and not too many people did

I've only heard one cut from the album....and didn't like it at all....the song writing, production weren't up to par I thought.

Then again the rest of the album could be worse/better

Haven't heard them yet.

But...

I know the drummer's mom!
Very nice lady and is quite proud of her son.

VR

I thought they sounded pretty good on Letterman. Is it basically Guns 'N' Roses with Scott Weilan (sp.)? I thought the rhythm section looked familiar.

......................... Sorta. But, problem is, someone turned down Dave's vocals in the mix, and drowned him out with Alex's cymbals!!

This VR record is shite. Full of crap songs and the production is nothing to write home about either. I can't say that I'm not surprised. Back to the shop it goes.

I've not heard the whole thing yet, but the songs I have heard have left me flat. It's just like Audioslave IMO...gimmic band with no real band or musical chemistry...just celeb names cashing in on their celeb status (which was well earned by all in thier prior projects).

On another note...any thoughts as to when the "compression wars" will end? I pray for the day when the well mixed, breathing rock album makes a comeback. The new Fire Theft record is probably the best I have heard in a long time...but even it has digital crunchies here and there.

*sigh*

STP without Dan DeLeo (& bro) is not STP. Slash is a 2-dimensional substitute IMO.

STP records are great. This one was not.

Slash is a joke of a guitar player.

I love the story of when some fool decided it would be hip for Dylan to use him on one of his records. Slash tells the story - apparently still bewildered from the experience. As it goes, Dylan asked him to play like Django Reinhardt on the track. Apparently he didn't know what the F#@$ to do. As he tells it, Dylan released the track, left the entire solo section of the tune in but omitted slash's guitar solo altogether.

Not sure what to make of that story

Don't think Slash was ever trying to pass himself off as a session guy

actually....

Latest Guitar Player has an interview where Slash talks about playing sessions the last 3 or 4 years to "keep busy" and to "expand my horizons"....

He specifically mentions a Ray Charles session where Ray was asking him to play along to music sheets....but Slash doesn't read music...and there were some problems....that eventually got sorted out....

I don't think there is a good song on it after many listens.

Unfortunately my local store doesn't do refunds.

As for the production, that mix is horrid (IMO). The snare and drums are so dull and there is this thin little whispy hi-hat throughout. Some other problems too, but those stood out to me big time.

Just no edge or power to it.

I don't think this can be called "This Years AudioSlave", like I have been hearing all over the web. It's not even in the same league. AudioSlave had some great songs and amazing sounds going on. This has neither.

Once again, just my opinion. I'm a huge fan of both involved ex-bands.

Cheers!

ugh, that audioslave album was one of the worst albums i have ever bought. nothing worth a damn on it.... but was anyone expecting more from VR? i mean come on, its just rock music. guns and roses didnt change the world and neither will VR... but they are selling out across the country.

and i like slash's guitar playing on GnR...

and STP kinda sucked after their first album.

Yeah, I concur...

But whats really interesting is that "Appetite" continues to sell 9000 a week! Work that out over the X years its been out!

I'd say that qualifies as iconoclastic fer sure, and as you say, if they're selling out gigs, thats a thumbs up from the fans, at least for the concept and the novelty of seeing this particular combo live.

I bet it would be worth seeing, but the kidz will soon get tired of, and remove the album from their iPods!

You know, I do not dislike Slash but I do not understand the incredible audilation he gets for his sound and his playing.

His sound...a Marshall and a Les Paul. Overly middy but not bad, just not great.

His playing...sometimes he pulls out a good lick, but mostly just stuff that I have heard done better. Blues rock. Nothing revolutionary here. You want to hear someone do that stuff cleaner, faster and better....get Frank Mariono and Mahogany Rush Live....the black cd.

As for VR.... I liked one of the comments that the drummer said, "the sound is fresh and young." I have heard the word "young" more then once from promo tags for the new band.

Young....as in pushing forty. Stop pretending that you are 18 years old, it is ok to be past 30.

It may rock, but do not look for sincerity here folks.

Aaaaahhhh, haven't heard that name in awhile. And you are so right. Too bad he never got more aclaim than he did. Also, in the same vein, Gary Moore shows up a lot in Slashes playing, too. But at least let's give Slash some props for actually putting a guitar solo in a song...

Gary Moore.....now that guy can shake the room! I do not think that Slash is there yet.

But you are right, at least he solos ...even if most of his solos are disjointed licks. dfegad

I'm keeping the album, just because it is my first speciman of a CD "protected against unauthorized duplication." It sounds almost like a challenge, but I would have to take the shrinkwrap off first, instantly destroying its collectors value.

Fair enough accusations about Slash. But ya gotta admit that the solo on Sweet Child O' Mine is up there with the best.
