Take a deep breath

Where's the PANIC button?

You know, like that cable that you pull on the bus or trolley when you want the driver to stop?

On RAP, it used to be the word HITLER that was thrown out when someone had had enough and wanted the thread shut down.

I'm just asking because it seems like we need a button or a word to use as a CEASE AND DESIST function. Between the Mint C-12 thread and the Anyone used Buzz Audio gear threads, it seems like things are spirally out of hand quickly.

And it's not just here. I've got the same thing going on at my place too. It's really atypical, at least in recent memory. (Maybe I have a short memory....what was I asking about?)

Thanks to Jules, or whomever, for shutting those down.

My question: What's up? Some cosmic alignment that's making everyone testy? Did someone put itching powder in everyone's drawers? Too much free time?

I don't get it. But I'm looking forward to its passing.

And just to keep it on topic (high end), here's an article I found that defines the TOP 5 MICROPHONES AT ANY PRICE. I'm sure there won't be any disagreements about that.

Top 5 Microphones At Any Price - A Guide to Expensive Microphones - Recording Mics - Vocal Mic

Yep, too many threads end up in fights and childish word bashing nowadays.

Can't we just keep it civilized, ok ?

My guess is, that a lot of ppl. feel the strain put on society, and especially in the "music industry" finally now in their own inmediate surroundings. (denail anyone?) And are therefore more irritated, grumpy, quick to start arguments.
Yeh let's be civil. Opinions are like arseholes.

winter blues? it's hard enough for most of us to catch some sunlight, even worse during the long winter nights.

there is grumpy and then there are people who just make it their buisness to spread negativity.

i would say, take a deep breath and try and remember that there are human beings on the other side of these posts! it's easy to overlook i guess.

my lovely lady followed the burl converter thread with the wide-eyed fascination of an onlooker at a bad accident. at one point she asked, "why do you even bother?"

i had to think about that; i'm still thinking about it.

there are a lot of good-willed and good natured people here, and there are a lot of people here who are argumentative or contrarian yet still maintain civility and respect. then there are a goodly number of people who get real personal real fast; i'm not sure if their numbers are growing, or if they're just getting more vocal and thus lowering the s/n ratio. it definitely feels more hostile here than ever.

i stick around because of the people who are genuine in their desire to teach and to learn, or to just have a good conversation. everyone else i generally bypass without responding, ime there's no way to engage their energy without fueling it.

you have to set the example for the kind of exchange you want. you have to be the living embodiment of the dynamic you wish to see. never stop pushing to create the community you want to be a part of.

in this place, your words *are* your actions. choose them carefully.

The time of year, too. Holiday cheer.

The best way to deal with them is to humor them. They don't need to know you are actually laughing at them. You know, and that's what matters.

Well after all this, I've learned:

1- I should be more discrete.

2- I don't have to take anything personal.

3- Since this is a public forum I have to be partial and do not expose myself, I don't know who is reading.

4- You have to understand that maybe you made some achievement but as weird as it looks, maybe that's ofensive for some people and it's ok, so it's better to reserve that just for you, so no more "hey I'm #1 in Billboard this week!" because maybe, there's a guy who have tried his entire life to be there and is so frustrated about that, that he hate just to listen anything close to "Billboard, or grammy or anything"
5- I think that our moderators need to be more strict and should clean all the rant before a post became a bad and ofensive discusion.
6 They should be more stricts about what belongs to a "Hi End" and "So much gear", etc, etc, because some times there are some amateur or semipro guy discussing things that they don't know about and kill something that could be an interesant discusion.

That's my opinion.

delcosmos.

P.S. C'mon guys it's christmas time, let's bring the good vibe back.

I have just checked out the 2 threads (the buzz and the c12 thread) and I just realized how much same everything in this world is and it doesn't matter where you are. Just like success would be a crime. Here in slovakia it's a pretty common technique to blame and slander anybody who is successfull but as I said it seems that's pretty much the same everywhere.

if those people would spend their time and energy on making better records rather then writing infantine comments on people who have earned serious reputation and money with their tallent, skill and hard work.

and I simply don't agree with point 4 - those are the posts that make gearslutz gearslutz. It's nothing wrong if someone is successfull in what he's doing just because of a bunch of assholes with their f*cked up lifes blameing everybody just not themselves.

Another vote for Seasonal Affective Disorder. Long time sufferer here. I had it long before I ever knew what is was called and before I even noticed that it always happened at the same time every year. Lack of sunlight at this time of the year has been show to cause symptoms that range from winter blues to full on clinical depression.

the shortened days, coupled with a musician's lifestyle mean some of us are seeing the sun less than a native of Helsinki

All the people who say "at this time of year?" should not be surprised. This is the time of year when we have to string colored lights everywhere and sing "it's the most wonderful time of the year!" as if we actually believed it. We're just putting on a brave front in the face of encroaching darkness.

let's take up a collection and send a set of full-spectrum light bulbs to all the Trolls.

I usually go over to 3db when it starts to get rough over here, but yeah, it's been a little rough there as well. Although it's pretty much one guy who stirs up the sh*t there, as opposed to the 1000's here that seem to enjoy it.

No way on points 1, 3, or 4! You have every right to share your success and your pride in what works for you. I've never read anything remotely inappropriate from you. You know I love reading your posts. You're letting the hecklers win!

And there's only a handful of really annoying hecklers. I try to be provocative to stimulate discussion sometimes but my motives aren't petty jealousy nor do I get so personal. Ignoring the really annoying ones for a while will frustrate them and they'll try a different approach or wander off.

I don't think there needs to be more moderation activity then there is already...we should train ourselves to let bad threads die. It's quite OK if a jerk gets "the last word"...we all know a jerk is a jerk.

My favorite part of this thread is the fact that the keyword tag is "arseholes". For the next time I need to go searching for such a thing...

It doesn't require very many people to create utter chaos. As the number of viewers grows, so proportionally does the number of troublemakers. It's why big stars often need bodyguards.

I read a study once (might have been posted over at 3dB, Lynn) that found that people correctly interpreted tone from an email only 50% of the time. That means that when you make a joke in your post, 50% of the time (or perhaps 50% of the people reading it) will not recognize that it's a joke.

Granted, I read through the C12 and Buzz threads here, as well as the stuff at 3dB, and I'm pretty sure those weren't jokes. But with odds like that, coupled with the inherent anonymity of the internet, it's easy to see how things can go wrong in a hurry.

That's worse odds than a Reno airport slot machine!

I agree sometimes people just won't understand a joke or feel they are being made a joke of. Also there is a language barrier as it's a worldwide forum, what may be satisfactory to say in one country may not be satisfactory in another, but this is less of an issue.

I think some people really like to stir the crap. I like a bit of a shitstirr sometimes but not at someones genuine expense. I can take a joke aimed at me and can usually pick who else can take a joke aimed at them too. Maybe people should ask first "are you serious or what"? Then that may sort out a lot of the confusion. I've noticed a lot of people just react too quickly.

We have a saying here in Aus called "sorting the shitt from the clay" so to speak, I think thats what needs to be done.

We have some gear forums in Aus too and I've never seen them degenerate into a slanging match.

Too many degenerates here.

That is a joke by the way.

Also 9 times out of 10 if you ask a stupid question your gonna get a stupid answer, no matter which country your from.

Just boot anyone who is an "asshole" and can't control themselves.

definition:

Argumentative to the point that they are annoying the genuine forum members.

Won't listen to moderators warnings, maybe a warning button or warning level?

Threatening or abusive.

i also wish this were the case. it's not hard to spot when someone is contributing nothing to the atmosphere but nasty for nasty's sake. a simple followup post from a moderator saying 'tone it down, now' would go a long way to stemming things before they get out of control.

i know that means a good deal more time and involvement on their part, but imho that's what the job entails and things just work better when the job is done consistently.

why else do we call them 'moderators'? to 'moderate', not 'wait until it's chaos then shut it down'.

I've found that anytime you make a joke it's absolutely imperative to put a little smiley face after it, otherwise people will completely misinterpret it and you'll spend the next 20 minutes trying to convince them you were kidding.
