Bummer. Who remembers his performance as a gunfighter/drummer in the movie "Zachariah"?

I saw Elvin a few years ago at NAMM. Yamaha had a big event at a hotel featuring a bunch of their artist "Cats" on a big stage. Before that whole thing happened though, they brought out Elvin to play drums...solo...with no mics.

Now, here's a room full of hundreds of people come out to see all these great players playing all the new Yamaha electronic stuff, drums, guitars, basses, keyboards, horns...everything and they put Elvin on a little 3 piece kit just front of the stage and he's gonna play SOLO before the show starts.

It

was

amazing!

He played for about 20 minutes and it was one of the most musical things I'd ever heard. Whodathunkit? He made the drums sing!

I was a fan of his his work with Wayne Shorter...the "Speak No Evil" album is one of my faves.

But after that unamplified 20 minutes of _just_ drums, I was inspired. Here's a guy that made inspiring music _like that_ most days for around 50 years.

I got to meet him at the show the next day. He had hands like baseball gloves. Huge and leathery!

Its a shame he's gone. Fortunately, he's no longer hampered by his failing health.

RIP, Elvin...

I was afraid of that...

I remember Elvin's solo, and that opening sequence with the James Gang - And that's pretty much ALL I remember. Of course, I was not completely myself when I saw it, if you know what I mean...

Elvin's solo holds up well, but the rest of it was better when I was a stoned teenager.
It's not nearly as good when you're a stoned adult.
