San Diego, CA Fires

Here we go again! Hope all of my fellow So. Cal GSers are keeping out of harm's way. I live in South Bay (Chula Vista) and we have a pretty huge fire burning a few miles from our house. It's currently raining ash pretty heavy, and the air is quite smokey.

Hope all you guys up in Carlsbad area are doing OK. The video looked like Rancho Santa Fe and areas near there had turned into Hell.
This is very scary. Praying for a freak rain storm.

We've been hit pretty bad in our town of Fallbrook. We are under manadatory evacuation and the fires are burning everywhere. 40,000 Fallbrook residents had to be moved through one road out of town since all the major roads are closed due to fire activity.

We (me, wife, kid, a senior citizen neighbor) decided to take the important stuff and setup house at the Speck Electronics building in town. I am right across the street from the sheriffs dept. There are no less than 150 police officers from all over San Diego and California staged here at a command center. We are safe at my office. If the cops start heading out.... that's when I head out.

Well at least the winds have died down a bit. Enough to get the planes and copters up to drop water. The Harris Fire, which is east of Chula Vista where we are has now split and become two fires. One is burning north towards Spring Valley, and the other is burning west, I believe near the Otay Valley area.

Local reporter Larry Himmel covered his own house burning down yesterday. F**&king heartbreaking!!

Is my life burning?

I wish I knew... I have my family which is safe. Most of my mic's and my rack of Neves.
But will my livelihood be gone when I return. I hope not. Especially because I forgot the hard drive with my current project on it! GS'ers please pray for all of us that are hoping and praying that the ring of fire sees fit to bypass as many structures as possible.

"Here come those Santa Ana winds again..."

which song?

No seriously, I hope you guys are safe! Most of us out here could be in that situation unfortunately. It's really depressing to see everything burning. Hopefully it doesn't get to your homes.

we're doing ok in Carlsbad. smoky as hell... but not imminent danger me thinks.

kinda a party with a few friends and their kids/dogs all crammed into our condo last nite.

fellow Gearslut was lucky enough to have the FDept take a stand right in front of his home and studio out building in Ramona... ( hydrant in front of his house!) reports were flames 100 ft high on the ridge... and they saved it! very stoked for him.

We'll ride this out, unless we get the orders to move... or if the smoke gets to be too much for the baby.

My thoughts are with those in the path of the fire. Having lived in Idyllwild, CA, for 15 years, and having to evacuate here before, I know how it feels to be in this situation. It was just a year ago we lost five local firefighters in a big blaze that happened during the Santa Ana winds. I've been on a fire line and was absolutely stunned by how fast a wind-whipped fire can move. Things can change quickly and drastically during these unpredictable winds, so if they tell you to get out, then do it quickly.

Cheers,

Your friend in Ramona is very very fortunate, given that the entire town was evacuated and now looks like a war zone.

Looks like the Harris fire near my house in Chula Vista is finally starting to slow down. Last night, one of the local newz stations kept reporting that "it looks like the Harris fire will burn all the way to the ocean". Gee thanks! Too bad it wasn't based on any facts.
Thank God they were wrong, again.

I'm in Santa Monica here, safe, but with fires all around and nothing but a smoke-filled sky, my heart goes out to my fellow G.S.... My thoughts and prayers go out to all you guys.

San Diego up date here,

I got caught in the back country this weekend (Ramona) couldn't evacuate due to road closer and fire. literally got sand blasted and my girlfriends truck got smashed by a falling tree. winds were estimated @60 mph+!!! most of my neighbors houses burnt to the ground. ours was lucky due to we live on a horse ranch surrounded by large dirt fields. although we spent the night in my van when we weren't moving to a safer place every couple hours. no sleep or shower for over two days. due to no power, water or food. thank gawd for wireless lap tops and cell towers that wouldn't die !!!!!

Propane tanks were exploding all night and some animals were burned alive. people just left them to die (couldn't evacuate) much worse that the 2003 fires here (I was here then too) am ok now though. hope this is the last time this happens!!!! -klauth.

Stay safe, Craig!

I heard the number of evacuated reached 500,000 yesterday. The fire is comparable to a Katrina-like disaster.

Best wishes to all Gearslutz in in SoCal. May the winds shut off and a real rain soak the land.
