I was working for a local artist on his premier cd. Most of his music was electronic with some guitar and vocal overdubb. I started to notice that this guy used alot of Reason sound as to compose and to arrange , mainly loops and rythms of his songs using Reasons and loops samples. Mid way thru the works I over heard his band mates and him talking that they were using cracked version of Reason, copied sounds, and CakeWalk to write their song and compose most of the tracks we were using for the Cd. I mentioned to them that this is not a cool thing to do. They can't use the sound of a stolen software (Reason) for their cd, which they called their own original work. The band pretty much told me that it is not in my position to say anything about this. Am I wrong to tell them that? we all hate works being ripped off even if it is softwares. what sort of trouble could they face if Reason find out that their songs and final product cd was made out of stolen Reason software? Is there an article about this issue somewhere you can point me to? most appreciated. clueless. |

The reason sounds are fully copyrighted, as are all sound design works. When you buy the software, you buy the right to reuse their creative work. If you don't buy the CD, you're essentially in the same legal bind as someone who cuts samples from an old James Brown record and tries to release it without clearance. If it's a dud, probably no worries. If it makes money, they're in a world of hurt. -sm

How much is a copy of Reason? If they purchase a copy between now and when the crap could possibly hit the fan, thus averting a debacle, then who's the wiser? Please tell them that as soon as their CD comes out, I'll make bootleg copies and sell for $4.00 NYC Drew
