The Real Problem with GEARSLUTZ!!!

The Real Problem with GEARSLUTZ!!! (and sites like it on the internet)

There should have been a requirement that all members post their true identity before being allowed to join.

EDIT: And I'm not taking about your very detailed info such as your date of birth, SS#, mother's maiden name, gay or straight, your dog's favorite food. Just any type of simple contact info such a webpage or link to your industry work or studio, etc etc.

Too many people are hiding behind screen names CLAIMING what they've done. WHY??? I'm sure you'd be pissed if a record company didnt give proper credits for your work.

So why HIDE now?

They are many good people here that have listed their true info without a second thought.

We should all be wary about atttaching our names to anything on the Internet. I come to Gearslutz to unwind, and the last thing I need is for every stupid thing I say, after 12 hours in the saddle, to be freely searchable by my corporate masters. Beware! The age of Google is upon us.

I like the anonymity. Bwaa-haa-haa-haa!

Oh crap, wait, I am not anonymous anymore.

So much for that idea.

You'll get my name if you click my profile (It's Dave Schonauer). And a link to my bio and studio (MorningStar Studios) . I prefer not to clog up the forum with redundant signature crap.

But I wholeheartedly agree with you.

All jokes aside...seriously.

What type of man (or women) is scare to reveal who they really are?
Are you hiding because you are HIDING something?

How can everyone take your advice seriously?
It also seems very disrespectful to the people you have identified themselves.

that's me on the left too!

you're right, a lot of people pretend to know a lot more than they really do and threads end up with people arguing about what they've done and why this is better than that, etc.

there is so much fighting and intimidation on this board. i wish people would just chill out

I cosign. The last thing I would want is people at work or possible jobs googling my name and finding all my posts on forums and such seeing my interests and thoughts on certain subjects (political views, religious beliefs and so on). A crazy stalker could take your name and find your address, phone number, possible family members, yearly salary, parking tickets you got 10 years ago all for $29.99.

To have that kind of information available to anyone in the world at any time is a scary invasion of my privacy IMO

I use my real name simply because it never occurred to me to use an alias.
It does piss me off when people who are hiding behind an alias come in and shit all over a thread and argue with people are not hiding and who are therefore accountable for their comments.
Seems like the cowards way to me.

Do you know how easy it is for a most people with computer knowledge to find out your IP address?? That's if they really wanted to know. and as with any forums...you the administrators can clearly see the IP adress that you post from EACH TIME YOU POST.

people please stop making excuses.
and please stop filling in your handle/nickname/alias on job applications.

Yeah, i think it cuts both ways. On one hand you get some folks pretending to know what they don't know, or to have done what they haven't, and they definitely say things that they most likely would not say to someone's face. But on the other hand sometimes you get more candor and inside info than you would normally get if folks always had to post their names and were held accountable for everything they said. Besides it's really quite easy to tell whose full of shit, if you couldn't tell that, you wouldn't have started this thread in the first place.

I've posted this before but if anyone actually cares my name is Bill Holder (there is a photo of me in the M Lange Kiwi blowout thread), a long time ago in a galaxy far far away I used to work at CRC, and various jingle houses in the Chicago area.

On another note, am I the only one who worries that posting all of this info about what gear we buy, and photos of our very expensive racks will catch up to us one day and someone with ill intent will come knocking?

So the name on your birth certificate is Docta'J aka Big NUK? Sorry, but aren't those a "handle/nickname/alias"? What's YOUR full name?

I don't think there's anything wrong with someone wishing to remain anonymous on a message board. If they start talking jive or spouting heavy posts, they shouldn't be surprised when people want to know who they are, tho, and they shouldn't be offended if people choose to not take their opinions at full face value if there's no "true" handle attached. Personally, there are several "anonymous" posters on this board whose opinions I value greatly.

People can still give great advice and serve up viable opinions anonymously. But if you're gonna start swinging serious weight around, either be prepared to back it up or don't serve it up in the first place.

I think theres a huge difference between a handful mods on a message board (who are supposed to be responsible) having access to your IP and the entire member roster of a forum having access to your full name.

I used to use "kewlboyee69" for my identity, but it got too embarrassing when filling out my job apps at gas stations to have to explain that they could call me kewlboyee if they weren't comfortable with Mr. 69.

Of course now I use a woman's name and I'm a guy... no issues here...

I am on myspace and stuff though, with some numbers in my name instead of letters, I prefer some anonymity. I have heard of people getting looked up by potential employers using email addresses on social networking sites and I would pissed to find that happened to me, so I use an email address for professional stuff that is not correlated with any of that crap.

For me it's a security issue. Here's my real name, here's what city I'm in, and here's all the expensive gear I own. Please come rob me now.

If someone wants to PM me, and I "know" them from the forum, I'll tell them who I am. FWIW. I will say that I'm not Batman, Regis, or Madonna.

I do wish there was a forum where everyone could post ONE example of their work, as a qualifier.

Assuming someone isn't famous, what do you expect to gain from knowing their name?
