I like what Prince did here. You have a bona fide superstar attempting to shift peoples perception of recorded music. Who wouldn't throw that CD in the player and give it a listen? I would never buy that CD as I'm not a Prince fan, but if it came to me for free, I would give it a chance. Maybe its really f'in good, and I'll become a Prince convert. Who knows... What I do know is: this CD will undoubtedly sound amazing in comparison to all the MP3s people have been rotting their ears with lately, and maybe it will kickstart a desire for quality over quantity. Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about. Who's to say... For a while I've been thinking that eventually we're going to see recorded music given away for free as the standard way of marketing a musical performer. It's then just a matter of how to use that giveaway to sell whatever it that people will buy in order to sustain the artist/label/publisher (merch? ringtones?). I think its unavoidable.

yeah great concept Apparently Communism has infiltrated Music... This is just retarded... Advertisement is the only way to support giving the music away for free, and I doubt that some joe blow band just getting started will get any advertisement possibilities.... Giving a single away is fine, but the whole damn album puts everyone out of a job....

| I think FOPP's problem is that they're competing with Virgin and HMV and they can't take on the big guys. I don't see it much as a music industry issue as a business strategy issue for music stores.

I saw that hmv has taken a massive drop in sales recently so they are no longer the big boys.

I like what Prince is doing too. He's playing the game. And trying to win.
