believe it or not, i'm going way back to 1975(?) on this one, but i think bob dylan's desire album disappointed big time after it followed up what i consider to be his best achievement, blood on the tracks. i truly love that record and i was so pumped for his next record to come out. when desire came out i got it immediately and, man, just terrible (by comparison). i haven't bought a dylan record since.

another one that just came to mind were the 40 or so records that elton john put out after his mid-seventies release of blue moves. the first one i remember was called single man. again, i rushed out to get it and, good lord, it was just terrible. of course, that's when bernie left him so no wonder.

showing my age here.

Maybe not biggest flop, but Gene Clark's No Other comes to mind. Asylum release from the early seventies, huge budget($100,000), good songs, way over produced.

If there was a soundtrack album for the Sgt Peppers movie (the BeeGees/Frampton disaster) it was probably one of the biggest flops.

Michael Jackson's super-big budget album; the one that was his 'big comeback' and also considered one of the most expensive albums of all time? I can't remember the title, not that I care to, but.....that should be a contender? Or did it eventually sell enough not to be a bomb?

Actually Garth Brooks, after all his mega-sales, really hit the bottom with that ficticious 'rock persona' album he came out with, tied in with a film. Another good flop.

Best,

G'n'R - Chinese Democracy.

It falls so short of expectations that they decided not to release it at all.

Wow one mans floor is another mans ceiling. Though I do agree that BOTT was Dylans finest moment I dug Desire although not a BOTT it had some great songs on it, who can argue with

"What time was it said the judge to Joey when they met Joey says 5 to 10, the judge said thats exactly what you get"

Though I do agree with you that after that period Dylan kind of lost me.

I bought Paul Simon's "Surprise" last year all I can say is ZZZZZzzzzzzz. But then again how do you top Graceland?

Another one is Supertramp. After Breakfast in America they had an album ( forgot the name but it had the song It's rainin again) ZZZZZZzzzzzzz

Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut". Both a commercial and an artistic flop.

Last Metallica album, the one that sounded like a (bad) demo.

As I recall, Springsteen's "Nebraska" didn't see anywhere near what the label thought it would. (I thought it was actually a pretty interesting record, though.)

I'm surprised noone mentioned the Maria Carey records that Geffen paid her NOT to make...something like 20mil

That's a real flop, you don't even have a record to shelve at the end of that.

I always thought that album should be required listening for "how to not engineer or write a record 101". A lot of people liked how raw and edgy it sounded. I thought it sounded amateur and irritating. That album fatigues my ears, not only with the loudness of the record, but the diarrhea that some would call songwriting.

"Invisible kid
Never see what he did
got stuck where he hid
Fallen through the grid"

WTF!!!????????

I scribbled things like that in my notebooks when I was twelve. It would be embarrassing to admit that as an "artist", those were the deepest lyrics that I could come up with. I know that alcohol is a serious addiction but James Hetfield needs to seriously consider bonging some everclear soon so the world can enjoy a good Metallica album for the first time in about 20 years.

I made records that sounded like St. Anger when I was 14 (and they sucked so bad that I would never share them with the outside world). I had two SM58's and a Tascam 424 and we recorded in a storage space that had aluminum walls (ahh acoustics). The thing is, my drummer actually had a snare drum, instead of the garbage can that was played by Lars on that album. At least I had an excuse for my my stuff sucked A) I had a $10 a week allowance (not quite a multimillion dollar budget) and B) Hmmmmm, maybe because I was FOURTEEN!!!!!!

The part that sucked the worst on that album: You have SEASONED megastar musicians coupled with the guy (Bob Rock) that made The Black Album (arguably one of the best sonic albums of the 90's) and St. Anger was all they could come up with?? What a let down. I do not claim to be an amazing engineer, but I honestly could have made that album sound much better with all the gear they had access to. Oh, and there's nothing cool about 40 year old men making an album that sounds like it was recorded in a garage. Leave that to the teenagers. St. Anger was not a "going back to your roots album". Metallica's roots were always good songwriting, musicianship and sonics. Instead it was a mid-life crisis.

For several years now I have been shouting from the mountains the praises of this brilliant recording. A failure only in sales.

Sorry a bit off topic but if you ever have the chance to listen to this CD you'll never regret.

Hopefully their arguments consist of:

"That's why the last album sucked! Quit it!"
