Use a damned de-esser!!

Saw a favorite group of mine last night called Porcupine Tree (probably a few fans here) at the Roxy in Boston. The sound was great except just like every other concert I go to the damn S-sounds coming from the PA were unbearable and giving me a headache. This has got to be the most overlooked part of sound, both live and recording but especially live. I can take the boomy, shitty bass, guitars that are too loud, ect.. but I cannot stand it when every time an "s" or a "ch" (sometimes a lot worse than the s's) sound occurs I feel like my ears are are suffering permanent damage.

Sibilance has got to be the biggest ruiner of a mix IMO. Is it so hard to use a damn de-esser?

i think in a live context it might be. you might get some phasing issues.
it has to be right at the source at the mic.
