Question Digi new exchange price list...is it a trick?

Woah Woah!

I just got an email from Digi today telling me that I can exchange my mix system to a HD accel sys for a cheaper price than before.

I went on Digi site and look at the exchange price...and it is true. What is going on here? Am I imagining thing here? But what does it mean to the HD accel?

does someone here tell me if Digi is about to come out with a new card...???

I am confuse and cheated at the same time...because I did made an exchange back then and have to pay way more for the HD.

It probably has something to do with the fact that used mix systems are going for outrageous prices on e-bay. I can't think of any time in the past where the previous generation of digi hardware didn't drop in value like a rock.

I just spent $2,500 for 2 second hand Mix farms. This will fill my 7 slot exp chassis. So I will have Mix + 6. Those cards would have cost TWICE that price in the UK (I bought em from Canada)

I am confident I will now be able to run all the Sony, UAD, Cranesong and other goodies I need on large sessions.

Next stop WILL be HD Accell (or whatever Digi bring out in 2,005)

jt916,

Based on your first post, I thought the sky was falling the first time I replied (and erased it), but it turns out the exchange is $1500 in my favor. I would have had to pay $3995 plus my Mix core to get an HD1 core, but now it's only $2495.

I'm not sure what exhange you made, but to me it seems like a good deal.

Also, since Digi just came out with the Accel card, I seriously doubt they're going to release another new card anytime soon.

This should be in the Good News forum unless you got screwed somehow.

Robotnik,

Sorry to be curt, but that's a load of sh!t. Keep the misinformation outta here.

Here's a reply from yesterday ago by Digi to someone asking if an HD Core Accel card is 'around the corner':

Hi Bob,

Digidesign has no current plans to release an "Accel Core" card.

I find it hard to beleive that DIGI will ever be particularly forthcoming about what's around the corner.

This whole buisness of Digidesign 'screwing' their customers with planned obselecence is nothing new. I know people who invested upwards of $20k in the early Session 8 system and then digi stopped supporting it shortly after. They've done the same thing with every successive upgrade since then.

My question is: Why has no other company come up with anything comparable? I've tried many different DAW systems, and not one comes close to th fluid, intuitive nature of Protools. Particularly for editing.

Jax,

that is the thing. I don't know if it is good news or bad news for the folks who already paid bank for the ealier exchange price list or the folks who about to do the exchange now and then find out that they got sucker into cleaning out the old HD stock so Digi can come out with a new card next week...dam that is a mouthful.

with the history of Digi and its practice...I am (again) confused.

I got to upgrade due to OSX so HD is a must...but then...goddam it.

sorry.

This week current, maybe. Next month?

Accel wasn't suppose to come out either according to other Digi guys.

Valid point. I don't expect Digidesign to keep everyone happy for long. They do have a bad track record.

But I gotta look at this from the perspective of getting what you need and calling it enough. PT gets people addicted to getting more and more DSP and higher resolution to the point where tools become toys. I mean, how many people really *need* the ability to run every plug-in made on as many channels as possible, in a resolution that isn't supported in most commercially available formats? IMHO, too much DSP and high resolution gets people forgetting about what matters, but I used a Mix core (and outboard) for five years, so my perspective somewhat different. I think what matters is using what you *need* to its fullest extent. Ok, I'm off my soapbox.

While the truth stinks, Digi burns its customers without remorse, but only because they can. The market bears it.

Why to you need to upgrade your OS? What is it that's not working?

I use a Mac with 9.2 and I prefer it to OSX by far. OS-X really lacks the elegance of 9.2. X is very cartooney and un-intuitive. It's no wonder proffesionals of all kinds have resisted moving toward it.

In my opinion what's kept the "pros" from switching is that they have to give a lot of their cracked plug-ins.

PT on panther works so much smoother than on 9.

I was in the process of getting my lease together when I saw the increased discount and the additional plug-ins that came with the system upgrade from a Mix3 to an HD3 Accel. (I had to tell my dealer about it though, Go figure) I took this approach. My lease is for three years. It will be mine at the end of that time and it does what I need it to at the present time and in the near future. If Digi comes out with a system in the next year that blows it out of the water then I still have a system that does what I need it to do, and when the 3 years is up I will trade it up to the next new amazing system. Digi does have a rep for not giving any clues about upgrades and that is the risk I take when I invest in their product. Tell that to a local company who invested $250,000 in multiple systems in December and asked before they bought if anything new was on the horizon and were told no, only to have them introduce the HD system in January. They got screwed big time and now just spent $100,000 upgrading to HD. Thank god they have deep pockets. I am a professional engineer who has used virtually every system on the market and many that have gone the way of the dodo bird. It is the most stable, reliable and well known system I can buy and also is one that my clients expect and trust. It doesn't mean the other systems are bad but for what I need it is the one that works. Ask yourself, can you live with the power for as long as it will take to recoup your costs? Does it give you the ability to work faster, easier, and possibly bill more per hour than your current system? Will it give you a leg up over you competition? Will it make you get home to your wife and kids sooner? (Ok now I am just being silly) If you answer yes to any of these then I say take the risk.
Good luck and enjoy your new system,
Michael Greene
