The Loudness war

how is it possible for ones music to be so loud for instance the big bang by busta rhymes is loud. the drums seem hollow and often missing the power where its supposed to be, misc rap albums seemingly feel hollow, how is it even possible to make a record that loud and all for a "war"?

Has anyone pushed they're personal preferences for a client, or have heard the albums like this, big bang, kingdom come, and im sure theres others perhaps in rock under this catagory.

Everytime I've mastered a project over -12 dB RMS or so.

Which is to say every time.

Just posted a similar thread in another forum. It's so self-defeating. The Game's album is another one. So loud it's distracting. I mean, I love compression and using dynamics processing to get a squashed sound sometimes, but the overall in your face sound of records these days is really killing me. Oh well, I know it's been debated to death, but I really I wish we as audio engineers could just find a way to go against the grain and still maintain our livelyhood's while making great sounding records that dont sound like a wall of pink noise w/ drums.

This is the moan zone, so I'm moaning.

I love jazz for breaks from working on rock and modern pop. just for the UN_loudness of it. for use or lack of better words.
