Titanium PB meets floor :(

Hi

My Titanium 15" Powerbook just did a 3' gainer onto the floor (French judge scored it a 4.7) and although the machine is ok the LCD is "no bueno". Applecare doesn't cover "Acrobatics" and it looks like I'd be into it for over a grand for them to fix it.

I'm not afraid of "DIY" and this is a pretty easy one. Do any fellow sluts have experience changing LCDs? I found a couple of third party sources for parts, ScreenTek, PowerBookMedic, LCDs4Less (not a confidence boosting name but cheapest source nevertheless). Anyone have recommendations?

It may be cheaper for you to get a new one (not necessarily current model) or a new ibook.

It could very well be modular enough that, given a set of torx wrenches and other tools you could replace it yourself. Then again, it could be sticky nasty nightmare. Hard to tell until you get inside one and look. If you can get the LCD on the cheap, I'd go for it. Just be cautious a lot of refurb'd lcd's are dead pixel refugees (rejects from other customers) or have other odd characteristics.

Hi

One of the companies I spoke with this morning said the screen isn't so expensive but the fact that its epoxied in the titanium housing makes it damn near impossible to replace. Compatible LCD screen = $500. Screen in housing > $1000!

I'm thinking of selling it to a parts company and seeing what Macworld brings.

Its a damn shame. I mean, it fell less than 3 feet and the rest of the machine works fine (I'm typing on it now!).

Had the same exact thing happen to my PB about 6 months ago. Didn't damage the screen, but knocked the DVD drive out of alignment.

Gave to the wife (happy anniversary) who just uses it for email, bought a new 12 inch about a month ago.

I know that doesn't help you, I'm mainly just bragging that i have a 12 inch.

Full on bummer!

I only just dropped $800 repairing an Ibook 600 (all my biz stuff on it, motherboard brain fart) and managed to do a very respectable (and I thought elegant) 'toss' onto the sidewalk from a rucksack / backpack where the CD drawer lid flew off.. only to survive it..

I feel your pain...
