    Hi there,
I noticed that you have or had the Obsidian and I am trying to decide whether or not I should get the Obsidian 500 or the Alan Smart cl1a. I feel my mixes are pretty good but it seems they are a tad on the shrill side and not as much clarity as a real record. So maybe I feel I am 85% there. I use a RME UFX, Yamaha hs8 monitors, sonar x2/fl studio 11 and currently run vocals through a golden age pre amp 73 mk2 and a tube tech cl 2a compressor. I use all soft synths(omnisphere, sylenth1, massive etc...) and sampled drums itb. Do you think adding an obsidian or alan smart would help me get there closer? I have also thought about getting a dangerous music d box. Am I crazy? Do I need to keep buying gear? Or should I actually go for a better converter with great eq's otb? I feel my vocals are pretty much there...it is just the music. The music sounds good just sounds flat or shrill depending on how I EQ the master bus. Anyhow I hope you can give me some advice.

I have read many of your posts. i want to take some suggestion from you if you don't mind. i have recently purchased shadow hills dual vandergraph for my mix buss. after using plugins i am happy with my first hardware. its really nice going otb. now i am thinking of getting dramastic obsidian 500 as my alternate mix buss compressor. my main style of music is hip hop, house and dhol bhangra. should i stick with shdv or obsidian will be a next step qualitywise.

Hey man! I just read your posts on the Safe Sound Audio 500 stereo toolbox, Xpressor and the Obsidian and I have to thank you for doing that! I am new to recording but I've been making beats for some time now, and your in depth response forced me into getting an account with gear slutz! haha, anyways, you seem like the guy to ask a decent question... Because I'm in the same boat as you in terms of minimizing the 500 selection - I'm gonna go by the same principle and stick to a 6 slot chassis. With that said, does a single slot stereo-buss compressor exist?? Because I can only find 2 slot stereo master compressors (SS ST, Vandergraph, Obsidian), but it would be so sweet to find a single channel one. But I don't know if thats even possible, I mean maybe a stereo bus compressor needs two channels as requisites for internal processes??

    Hi there
Read your post and I might be in the same boat as you soon. Going from mr816 to a mytek with FireWire. Did you even sort out latency issues you were having with the mytek? Curious what kind of latency times you had and what kind of computer you had to run this on?
Ideally I can I can use the analog in and once mytek releases updated firmware I can add an additional 8 channel via the aes port out to FireWire unit. But I need this for multi tracking so latency has to be at least manageable. I'll mainly be itb and not doing any looping out to sends and return.

Hope it's working out for. That's a lot of money to blow away.

Hope it worked out for you

Never listen to opinions regarding gear. For every 50 nobodies on Gearslutz that say a piece of gear doesn't sound good enough to cut it, I know at least one somebody who is cutting it in NYC with that piece of gear.

Remember kids, Gearslutz is for entertainment purposes only.
